Remove/install valve springs and/or valve stem seals - AR05.30-P-3500GZB: Notes

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
1 Remove strut tower brace Model 164.8 only
IMPORTANT Remove spring dome strut at spring dome mounts.

2 Remove engine trim panel IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not install engine cover until oil-tightness has been checked.  
3 Remove camshafts   AR05.20-P-6992OM 
4 Remove compensation elements NOTES Do not use a magnet. This would magnetize contact surfaces of the compensation element and the roller drag lever. This may cause minute iron debris to gather which can result in damage to the compensating element and cam.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Reinstall compensation elements that are not replaced at the same position.

5 Rotate piston of cylinder to be worked on to TDC IMPORTANT Crank the engine at the crankshaft in the running direction.  
6 Connect cylinder leakage testing unit (2) to cylinder to be processed IMPORTANT Connect intermediate piece "R1/4" from compression tester kit with the connector (1) and plug the connector (1) into the injector bore hole. The connection piece (1) is secured using the original clamping claw.
IMPORTANT Calibrate the testing unit and remove the check valve. Subject compression chamber of cylinder to a pressure of about 5 bar.

7 Put together assembly tool valves (3) and install on the cylinder head IMPORTANT Screw retaining fork on edge of cylinder head into thread and fit thrust piece vertically on upper valve spring retainer (4).

8 Press together valve spring (5) with assembly tool valves (3)    
9 Remove split valve spring retainer locks (6) IMPORTANT Use tweezers.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure split valve spring retainer locks (6) are properly fitted.
Tweezers, straight 160 mm with rounded tips
 
10 Remove upper valve spring retainer (4) and valve springs (5) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Valves must not be seated on the piston crown. Inspect upper valve spring retainer (4) for pitting, replace if required.  
11 Remove valve stem seals using pliers (10) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Check valve stems for formation of burrs. Oil the valve stem seals and press on with a drift (9). AR05.30-P-3500-02PI

12 Install in the reverse order

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.

13 Check for oil leaks with engine running
