INSPECT Checking    
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
1 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position Model 216, 221  
    Model 164 AR88.40-P-1000GZ
    Model 209 AR88.40-P-1000Q
    Model 211 AR88.40-P-1000T
    Model 219 AR88.40-P-1000TX
    Model 251 AR88.40-P-1000RT
2 Check engine oil level, correct if necessary    
3 Start engine, bring to normal operating temperature and switch off IMPORTANT Coolant temperature 60 to 80°C.  
4 Remove the partition wall between the wheelhouses Model 251 only AR62.30-P-2400RT
5 Remove spark plugs IMPORTANT Only if it is not possible to crank the engine due to the high compression.  
    Models 164, 251 AR15.12-P-1010GZS
    Models 209, 211, 219 AR15.12-P-1010TMG
    Models 216, 221 AR15.12-P-1010SMG
6 Rotate engine at crankshaft center bolt in direction of rotation of the engine to a 40° crankshaft angle after top dead center (TDC) IMPORTANT Rotate engine at crankshaft in running direction until scribe mark 40° on pulley/ vibration damper corresponds with scribe mark on timing case.  
7 Remove cylinder head covers Models 164, 251 AR01.20-P-5014GZS
    Models 209, 211, 219 AR01.20-P-5014TMG
    Models 216, 221 AR01.20-P-5014SMG
8 Press down the compensating element with a drift (1) NOTES Never use a steel tool to avoid damaging the surfaces.
IMPORTANT The compensating element should be pressed together very slowly with the normal force of the hand. Do not apply strong pressure.
IMPORTANT If the compensating element drops too strongly:
 
    Replace the compensating element
IMPORTANT If more than one compensating element is faulty, check the pressure oil supply to the cylinder head.

9 Install in the reverse order    
10 Conduct engine test run and check the engine for leaks
