Inspect cylinders for leaks - AR01.00-P-1300GZA (ML350, ML550, GL450, GL550)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

1 Bring engine to operating temperature (approx. 80°C) IMPORTANT Only check cylinder for leaks when the engine is at normal operating temperature.  
2 Remove key from the ignition lock IMPORTANT Vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889:
Press Keyless Go start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off.
Remove the Keyless Go transmitter card or transmitter key from vehicle and store beyond reach of the transmitter (at least 2 m).
 
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

3 Unscrew cap (1) from coolant expansion reservoir (2)    
4 Remove the oil filler cap (3)    
5 Remove air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1150GZA
6 Remove ignition coils   AR15.12-P-2003GZA
7 Remove spark plugs TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-01C 
8 Position piston of cylinder to be checked at top dead center with the top dead center selector IMPORTANT Crank engine at crankshaft center bolt in direction of rotation of engine.  
    SPECIAL TOOL

INSPECT Checking     
10 Pressurize cylinder with compressed air and read off pressure loss on cylinder leakage testing unit (04) Cylinder leaktightness: permissible loss total indication *BE01.00-P-1001-02Z 
    Cylinder leaktightness: permissible losses at valves and cylinder head gasket *BE01.00-P-1002-02Z 
    Cylinder leaktightness: permissible losses at pistons and piston rings
IMPORTANT If the crankshaft rotates:↓
*BE01.00-P-1003-02Z 
    Install retaining lock for crankshaft. AR03.30-P-5000GZA
11 Check other cylinders in firing order of the engine Firing order AR01.00-P-1300-03HA 
12 Install in the reverse order
