Disconnecting / connecting the engine wiring harness - AR01.00-P-2410GZ (ML500)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Removing/installing    
DANGER Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off the lifting platform.  Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and safety glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

1 Disconnect ground cable of battery NOTES Insulate ground line as a protection against unintentional contact of detached ground line with ground point of battery.
IMPORTANT Vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889:
Switch off engine, remove Keyless Go cards from the vehicle and keep outside the range of the transmitter.

2 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000GZ
3 Remove engine trim panel (3)   AR01.10-P-2405GZ 
4 Remove cover (2) on engine compartment fuse and relay box (F58) IMPORTANTRemoval:  Do this by unscrewing bolts (1).  
5 Remove cover (2) on engine compartment fuse and relay box (F58) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Check rubber seal in cover, replace if required.  
6 Remove electrical connector (4) and electrical connector (5)    
7 Detach rubber seal (7) on the right    
8 Loosen bolt (8) on bulkhead cover (9) IMPORTANT Do not unscrew bolt (8) fully. Fold bulkhead cover (9) upwards.  
9 Disconnect connector (6) on wiring harness (12)    
10 Remove engine wiring harness (10) from retaining clamp (11) IMPORTANT Place wiring harness down on engine.  
11 Lift/jack up vehicle   AR00.60-P-1000GZ
12 Detach connections on alternator See ↓  
    Remove alternator AR15.40-P-5032GZ
13 Disconnect ground (engine support) (W11/4)    
14 Unclip and separate the connector of the left O2 sensor upstream of the catalytic converter (G3/3x1) and/or connector of the right O2 sensor upstream of the catalytic converter (G3/4x1) from the retaining clamps. IMPORTANT Release electric feed lines from the retaining clamps.  
15 Unclip and separate the connector of the left O2 sensor downstream of the catalytic converter (G3/5x1) and/or connector of the right O2 sensor upstream of the catalytic converter (G3/6x1) from the retaining clamps. IMPORTANT Release electric feed lines from the retaining clamps.  
16 Disconnect connector for transmission control (13) IMPORTANTRemoval:  See: ↓  
    Removing/installing shield at transmission AR27.40-P-0700-01GZ
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA27.40-P-1014-01A 
17 Disconnect automatic transmission/intelligent servo module connector (X22/6)    
18 Install in reverse order    
19 Read out fault memory and erase if necessary IMPORTANT Stored faults which may be caused by disconnecting cables or by simulation during test operations, must be erased in the fault memory after completing the work.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect up STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
