Function requirements, general 

Function sequence for displaying operating conditions in general 

The operating conditions display provides the driver with permanent information about the current operating conditions of the vehicle. The Display operating conditions function is comprised of the following partial functions:

Additional function requirements for function sequence of speed display 

Speed display function sequence 

The wheel speeds determined by the rpm sensors are read in by the ESP control unit and transmitted via the drive train CAN. The instrument cluster calculates the current speed from the values received. This is adjusted with a stored speedometer characteristic and displayed via a stepper motor in the electronic speedometer (A1p8).

The instrument cluster makes available the vehicle speed value determined for other vehicle systems both on the interior CAN and on the drive train CAN.

IMPORTANT The circuit status is provided by the EZS control unit (N73) on the interior CAN and on the drive train CAN.

Additional function requirements for display of engine speed 

Display of engine speed function sequence 

The crankshaft speed recorded by the crankshaft position sensor is read in by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit or by the CDI control unit and transmitted on the drive train CAN.

The instrument cluster receives this data and actuates the tachometer accordingly via a stepper motor (A1p5).

Additional function requirements for function sequence of coolant temperature display 

Display of coolant temperature function sequence 

The coolant temperature recorded by the coolant temperature sensor is read in by the ME-SFI control unit or by the CDI control unit and forwarded to the drive train CAN.

The instrument cluster actuates the stepper motor of the coolant temperature display (A1p1) accordingly.

Display ranges

At coolant temperatures of T > 130 °C a warning message is output in the multifunction display (A1p13).

The actual values are displayed in the event of an additional fan (M4) being recognized as defective.

If the instrument cluster does not receive any coolant temperature, then the coolant temperature gauge is not actuated.

Additional function requirements for function sequence of fuel quantity display 

Display of fuel quantity function sequence 

The fill level measured via the fuel level sensor (B4) is read in by the rear SAM and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

The values received are evaluated with the aid of a tank characteristic and displayed in the fuel level indicator in instrument cluster (A1p2) via a stepper motor

The fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) lights up if the reserve range is reached.

Display of travel distance function sequence 

The function of the display of travel distance is comprised of several subfunctions:

Calculation of travel distance 

The wheel speeds determined by the rpm sensors are read in by the ESP control unit and forwarded to the drive train CAN. The instrument cluster calculates the distance covered from the values received in combination with the tire size.

Display of main odometer reading 

The display appears in the multifunction display.

The maximum displayed counter reading of the main odometer reading is 999999.

Display of trip distance 

The display appears in the basic display of the "Trip" menu in the multifunction display.

The maximum displayed counter reading of the trip distance is 9999.9. If this value is achieved, the figure returns to zero.

Saving mileage counts 

The main odometer reading is continually stored in the nonvolatile part of the internal memory. This memory also guarantees the retention of the counter reading for at least five years also when the power supply is decoupled.

The current reading of the trip odometer is likewise stored in the nonvolatile memory of the instrument cluster. However the current counter reading is first transferred from the volatile memory to the nonvolatile memory after a circuit change from circuit 15 ON to circuit 15 OFF.

Gear indicator function sequence 

The current gear is displayed in the gear indicator (A1p12).

The required data are transmitted from the electronic selector lever module control unit to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.

Function sequence of transmission mode display 

The current transmission mode is shown in the transmission mode display (A1p16).

The required data are transmitted by the VGS [fully integrated transmission control] control unit to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.

Function requirements for function sequence of engine oil level indicator 

Engine oil level indicator function sequence 

The engine oil level is read in by the ME-SFI control unit or by the CDI control unit.

If necessary the ME-SFI [ME] control unit or CDI control unit sends a message to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.

As a consequence the instrument cluster fades in the corresponding message in the multifunction display.
