Function requirements, general
- Circuit 30 ON
Exterior lights (ABL) in general
The exterior lights controls all the functions relevant to safety of the front lamps, side lamps and rear lamps of the vehicle.
The ABL system includes the following partial functions:
- Function sequence, on-board electrical system increase
- Function sequence, switching off the exterior lights
Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:
- Standing/parking lights actuation, function
- Headlamp control, function
- Additional functions for driving lights actuation function (with code (614) Bi-xenon headlamp unit or code (618) Bi-xenon headlamps or code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination or code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetrical curve illumination or code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or Code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))
- Front fog light actuation, function
- Turn signal indicator actuation, function
- Brake light actuation, function
- Backup lamp actuation, function
- Headlight switch off delay function
- Substitute lights and emergency lights actuation, function
Function sequence, on-board electrical system increase
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the on-board electrical system management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. The front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage required for the corresponding light function for this. The light functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is activated can be defined at the end of the production line.
The following functions can be coded:
- Low beam actuation when dark
(without code (614) Bi-xenon headlamp unit and without code (618) Bi-xenon headlamps and without code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination and without code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetrical curve illumination and without code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)
- Backup lamp actuation
- Actuation of front fog lights
(up to 30.11.09 and as of 1.12.09 without code (621) Intelligent light system (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent light system (right-hand traffic))
- Rear fog lights actuation
Function sequence, switching off the exterior lights
Switching off the exterior lights prevents the on-board electrical system battery (G1) from being discharged by the active low beam and standing light actuation.
The low beams may be switched on due to the auto on/off headlamps, the daytime running lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. A prerequisite for this is the circuit status of circuit 15 On.
With circuit 15 Off, the low beams are switched off.
The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off headlamps, the daytime running lights or manually via the exterior lights switch.
If the standing lights are activated by manually switching on the low beams, the auto on/off headlamps or the daytime running lights and if the driver door is then opened with a transmitter key (A8/1) inserted in the electronic ignition lock control unit, the standing lights are switched off.
If the standing lights were switched on manually with the exterior lights switch in the position "Standing lights", the standing lights are not switched off in model 204.0/2 up to 28.2.11, model 204.9.
In model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11, model 204.3 the standing lights are switched off if the on-board electrical system management determines that the ability of the engine to start is impaired by the discharge of the on-board electrical system battery.
If the ambient illumination function is activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing lights remain switched on for a fixed time interval of t = 60 s.
The ambient illumination function is described in a separate document.
