Function requirements, general
- No overvoltage or undervoltage (operating voltage range U ≥ 7 ≤ 17.5 V)
- "Ambient illumination function": activated in menu "Settings", "Light" in instrument cluster (A1)
- Light sensor (B38/1) (without code (345) Rain sensor) or rain/ light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor) signaling "Darkness recognized"
- Exterior lights switch (S1) in the "A" position (with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version)
With model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11 and model 204.3 with code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination or code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetric curve illumination or code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic), light-emitting diodes are used for the parking, standing and turn signal light functions.
To output the left parking, standing and turn signal light functions, the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) actuates the left front standing light and parking light (E1e3) and the left front turn signal light (E1e5) over the left LED; signaling lights actuation module (E1n7).
To output the right parking, standing and turn signal light functions, the front SAM control unit actuates the right front standing light and parking light (E2e3) and the right front turn signal light (E2e5) over the right LED; signaling lights actuation module (E2n7). The LED, signaling lights actuation modules actuate the supply voltages for the LEDs.
Headlamp switch-off delay (SWA), general
The SWA is used for leaving and finding the vehicle safely in darkness by switching on the vehicle ambient illumination.
The headlamp switch-off delay includes the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for headlamp switch-off delay (SWA)
- Function sequence for locator lighting (AFB)
Function sequence for headlamp switch-off delay (SWA)
After switching off the engine by turning the transmitter key (A8/1) in the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) or by pressing the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (S2/3) (with code (889) Keyless Go) (change of status of circuit 15 On to circuit 15R On), the headlamp switch-off delay function is requested.
The following information is evaluated by the front SAM control unit for output of the SWA function:
- Activated SWA function, sent by the instrument cluster over the interior CAN (CAN B)
- Status of circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN
- Light sensor status or rain/light sensor status read in over the wiper/inside rearview mirror LIN (LIN 2)
- Exterior lights switch status read in over the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1) (up to 31.5.10) or directly (as of 1.6.10)
After the engine is switched off the vehicle ambient illumination remains on for a specified period of t = 60 s. The time interval starts again after opening a vehicle door. The trunk lid (model 204.0/3) or the liftgate (model 204.2/9) is considered a vehicle door. Once all vehicle doors are closed again, this time interval is limited to t = 15 s.
The status of the front doors is sent by the left front door control unit (N69/1) and the right front door control unit (N69/2), the status of the rear doors (with model 204.0/2/9), the trunk lid or the liftgate by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) over the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit evaluates all relevant information and transmits a corresponding signal via interior CAN to the following control units:
- Rear SAM control unit
- Trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) (with code (550) Trailer hitch)
- Front door control units (with model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11, model 204.3)
The following components of the vehicle ambient illumination are actuated by the front SAM control unit:
- Left front side lamp and parking lamp
- Left front standing light 2 (E1e12) (with model 204.0/2 up to 28.2.11)
- Right front side light and parking light
- Right front standing light 2 (E2e12) (with model 204.0/2 up to 28.2.11)
- Vehicles up to 30.11.09 and as of 1.12.09 without code (621) Intelligent light system (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent light system (right-hand traffic) or with code (498) Japan version:
- Left fog lamp (E5/1)
- Right fog lamp (E5/2)
- Additional with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version:
- Left front side marker lamp (E6/1) (model 204.0/2)
- Right front side marker lamp (E6/2) (model 204.0/2)
- Left front side marker lamp (E1e6) (model 204.9)

The following components of the vehicle's ambient illumination are actuated by the rear SAM control unit:
- Left rear fog light (E3e5) (pulsed at P = 5 W)
- Left brake light, taillight and parking light (E3e9)
- Inner left brake light and taillight (E3e10) (with model 204.0/2/3)
- Left rear side marker lamp (E6/3) (model 204.0/2/3)
- Right rear fog light (E4e5) (pulsed at P = 5 W)
- Right brake light, taillight and parking light (E4e9)
- Inner right brake light and taillight (E4e10) (with model 204.0/2/3)
- Right rear side marker lamp (E6/4) (model 204.0/2/3)

The trailer recognition control unit actuates the taillights and parking lights of the trailer via the trailer socket (X58).
The left front door control unit actuates the left outside mirror ambient lamp (M21/1e1) (with model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11, model 204.3).
The right front door control unit actuates the right outside mirror ambient lamp (M21/2e1) (with model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11, model 204.3).
With vehicles up to 31.5.10, briefly activating circuit 15 after switching off the engine makes it possible to discretely leave the vehicle without activating the headlamp switch-off delay.
The active headlamp switch-off delay is terminated immediately by switching on circuit 15 or by triggering an antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) alarm (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW])).
Function sequence for AFB
When unlocking the vehicle using the release button on the transmitter key, the vehicle ambient illumination is switched on for a period of t = 40 s (time for automatic relocking).
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the request "Unlock vehicle" via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit evaluates it and transmits the request "Rear lamps On" via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit and to the trailer recognition control unit.
The components of the vehicle ambient illumination are actuated as described for the headlamp switch-off delay function.
The locator lighting function is aborted when a door is opened, the transmitter key is inserted into the electronic ignition lock control unit, or when an antitheft alarm system alarm has been triggered.
The headlamp switch-off delay and locator lighting functions run in parallel if necessary. However, an active headlamp switch-off delay function is not terminated by a requested locator lighting function and vice versa.
