MEASURING Measure
4 Measure depth of tread of all tires and note measured values on the maintenance sheet IMPORTANT Vehicles with spare tire: Perform measurement and all following checks on the spare tire as well.
IMPORTANT Measure depth of tread at point of greatest wear. Perform measurement at outside, inside and center of tread. Minimum depth of tread 1.6 mm.
IMPORTANT For safety reasons, tires should be replaced before the minimum depth of tread is reached:
  • Conventional summer tires at approx. 2 to 3 mm tread depth
  • Summer tires of PAX system at 3 mm tread depth
  • Winter tires at approx. 4 mm tread depth

INSPECT Check
5 Check tires for signs of damage and make sure that they are in good condition   AP40.10-P-4051Z
NOTES Information on tires/rims   AH40.10-P-9411-01A
6 Check wheel bolts NOTES The round contact shoulders on the lug bolts must be free of oil and grease. Replace wheel bolts with damaged thread, worn zinc coat on the radius seat or corroded radius seat otherwise these may shear off.
CLEANING Clean wheel bolts if necessary.

7 Check rims IMPORTANT Check for:
  • Dirt
  • to ensure that radius seats are free of oil and grease
  • Damage to centering, radius seats and rim flanges
  • Corrosion of contact surfaces

CLEANING Clean rims if necessary.

8 Check wheel hub, brake disk bowl at rim contact surface, and wheel bolt thread for contamination and corrosion NOTES Contaminated or corroded wheel bolt thread must be cleaned or recut. Remaining contaminants or corrosion in the wheel bolt thread prevent reaching the necessary preload force of the wheel bolt, despite reaching the specified torque.
The wheel hub should be replaced if the wheel bolt thread is damaged.
CLEANING Clean corroded surfaces with a wire brush or emery cloth.

INSTALLING Install
9 Apply corrosion protection to wheel hubs and wheel contact surfaces (cross-hatched area) Long-life grease *BR00.45-Z-1001-06A
10 Change round wheel-and-tire assemblies on front and rear axles IMPORTANT If necessary, and only on vehicles without mixed tires.
NOTES Retain running direction of wheels, as otherwise handling performances and comfort may be impaired and tire wear increased.

11 Slide on wheel-and-tire assemblies, and tighten the wheel bolts IMPORTANT Model 164, 240: Mount wheels with wheel lift.
IMPORTANT Observe the tightening sequence (1 to 5).

13 Correct tire pressure for all wheel-and-tire assemblies IMPORTANT In the event of tire pressure loss, determine cause and replace valve, tire or rim.
NOTES On vehicles with tire pressure monitor: Install only valve protection caps made of plastic in order to avoid corrosion.

14 Fit wheel covers Vehicles with wheel covers
INSPECT Check
15 Check expiry date of TIREFIT tire sealant Vehicles fitted with TIREFIT AP40.10-P-4054R
IMPORTANT TIREFIT tire sealant   AH40.10-P-0001-01A
16 Activate the tire pressure monitoring system On vehicles with tire pressure monitor, wherever possible:
Only when changing a wheel, tire change or change in tire pressure: ↓
Perform adjustments to the control system
