Remove/install the end cover - AR01.40-P-8913HA

ENGINES 111, 602.982 /983 /, 604, 605, 606

Modification notes

1.6.95 Technical modification: Interference-fit seal replaced by vulcanized seal in end cover. Step 6  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
IMPORTANT In production engines the radial sealing ring is vulcanized at the end cover. This end cover is not supplied as a spare part.
In the event of a repair, install end cover with pressed-in radial sealing ring.
   
1.1 Remove manual transmission Models 140, 202, 210 AR26.10-P-0020A
    Model 163 AR26.10-P-0020GH
1.2 Remove automatic transmission Models 140, 202, 210 AR27.10-P-0500A
    Models 461, 463 with transmission 722.3 AR27.10-P-0500G
    Model 463 AR27.10-P-0500BD
2.1 Remove clutch Manual transmission AR25.10-P-0050A
3 Remove flywheel, two-mass flywheel or driven plate Engine 111 AR03.30-P-8001A
    Engines 602.982/983, 604, 605, 606 AR03.30-P-8001HA
4 Check for oil leaks If the radial sealing ring is found to be leaking ↓  
    Replace rear crankshaft radial seal
If cause of the oil leak cannot be clearly determined ↓
AR03.20-P-3063HA
    Check rear of engine for external oil leak, determine AR01.40-P-8913-01HA 
5 Remove bolts (4, 5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 602.982/983 *BA01.40-N-1003-01B 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engines 604, 605, 606
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Screw bolts (4) onto end cover first.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 111 *BA01.40-P-1004-01G 
6 Press off end cover (1) Press end cover with vulcanized radial sealing ring off crankcase at the tabs (arrows).
Do not damage oil pan gasket when pressing off!
NOTESInstallation:  In case of repair on vulcanized radial sealing ring: Press in new radial sealing ring (21) into new rear cover and install.
 
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS End cover with vulcanized radial seal   BT01.40-P-0001-01A
    IMPORTANTInstallation: SPECIAL TOOL Screw insertion tool internal component (2) onto the crankshaft. Figure
    Clean end cover (1) separating surfaces, cover with sealant. *BR00.45-Z-1009-01A 
    IMPORTANT Sealant optional
Lubricate the radial sealing ring's (21) sealing lip and the offset surface.
NOTES Do not use grease!
Grease prevents the radial sealing ring's sealing lip from transporting the engine oil back.
NOTES When pressing on the end cover take care with the oil-pan gasket!
Pay attention to dowel pins (3)

7 Check crankshaft radial seal (21) If necessary, after inspecting ↓  
    Replace rear crankshaft radial seal
IMPORTANT If necessary install the radial sealing ring after fitting the end cover.

8 Install in the reverse order NOTES Before installing transmission, inspect for oil leaks ↓  
    SPECIAL TOOL Check rear of engine for external oil leak and determine cause. AR01.40-P-8913-01HA
