Remove/install rear axle shaft flange and angular ball bearing - AR35.20-P-0130A: Notes

MODIFICATION NOTES

13.4.00 Modified extractor tool 202 589 04 43 00 The second version of extractor tool 202 589 04 43 00 will have a pressure screw with a shear-off pin for the hydraulic auxiliary press. This makes its handling even safer. The pressure screw is available as a replacement part by quoting the special tool number.
New special tool SPECIAL TOOL Pressure screw 202 589 04 43 11 see operation 5.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
IMPORTANT Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Remove rear axle shaft   AR35.30-P-0620A 
2 Remove brake disc   AR42.10-P-0220A
3 Remove parking brake shoes   AR42.20-P-0530A
4 Pulling out rear-axle shaft flange (10, wheel carrier installed) IMPORTANT Hydraulic extractor tool: only tighten pressure screw of hydraulic auxiliary press to max. 40 Nm. AR35.20-P-0130-01B

IMPORTANT If the rear-axle shaft flange is too tight to be extracted with a force of 40 Nm, the wheel carrier must be removed and a stationary press used: ↓

    Remove wheel carrier: ↓ AR35.20-P-0115A 
    Pull out jammed rear-axle shaft flange (wheel carrier removed). AR35.20-P-0130-04GH

    Extract seized rear axle shaft flange (10) (wheel carrier removed). AR35.20-P-0130-04A

5 Remove retaining ring (9) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure that the retaining ring is properly seated in the wheel carrier.  
6 Pull double-row angular ball bearing (8) out of wheel carrier   AR35.20-P-0130-03A

7 Pull bearing inner race off the rear axle shaft flange (10)   AR35.20-P-0130-02A

INSPECT Checking     
8 Check lateral and vertical runout of rear-axle shaft flange (10) Permissible lateral runout *BE35.20-P-1001-01A 
    Permissible radial runout
IMPORTANT The rear axle shaft flange must be replaced if the test specifications are exceeded.

9 Install in the reverse order    
TEST VALUES FOR REAR-AXLE HALFSHAFT FLANGE
