SRS Light Remains On Or Flickers While Driving (500E)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL and 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. SRS warning light should glow and go out within 4-10 seconds. A problem exists if SRS warning light does not go out or if SRS warning light flickers occasionally while driving.
  2. Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged and in good condition. Turn SRS tester test selector switch to position No. 1. Connect SRS tester to SRS Red 10-pin connector. See SRS TESTER PREPARATION  . See SRS RED CONNECTOR LOCATION  table under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage reading on SRS tester. If battery voltage exists, go to TESTING VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER under SRS COMPONENT TESTING  . If voltage does not exist, disconnect negative battery cable.
  4. On 500E models, remove fuse panel mounting screws to enable fuse panel to be lowered. On back of fuse panel, ensure SRS fuse Black/Red wire connection is clean and secure.
  5. Disconnect SRS tester from SRS Red 10-pin connector. Set up SRS tester for external resistance measurement. See SRS TESTER PREPARATION  . Turn SRS tester test selector switch to position No. 9.
  6. Check for open circuit in Black/Red wire from fuse panel terminal No. 15 to pin No. 1 of SRS Red 10-pin connector. See Figure . Resistance reading should be 0-1 ohm. If reading is 0-1 ohm, go to next step. If reading is not 0-1 ohm, replace SRS wiring harness and retest SRS light system.
  7. Check resistance of Brown wire from SRS Red 10-pin connector pin No. 4 to vehicle ground. Resistance reading should be 0-1 ohm. If reading is 0-1 ohm, go to TESTING VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER below.
  8. If reading is not 0-1 ohm, an intermittent open exists in Brown wire circuit between pin No. 4 and main ground connections at steering column support bracket. See Figure . Replace SRS wiring harness. Ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
