SRS Light Does Not Glow (500E)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL and 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. If SRS warning light does not glow with other panel lights, check SRS fuse in fuse panel. If SRS fuse is not blown, remove instrument cluster and check SRS warning light bulb. If bulb is defective, replace bulb and retest SRS warning light system. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and retest. If warning light still does not work, check voltage supply to bulb. Go to next step.
- Set up SRS tester for external voltage measurement. See SRS TESTER PREPARATION . Turn SRS tester test selector switch to position No. 8. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Touch SRS tester lead to Black/Red wire of SRS warning light bulb socket, and touch other SRS tester lead to good vehicle ground. If voltage exists, go to step 4). If voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Disconnect battery. Remove SRS fuse. Turn SRS tester selector switch to position No. 9 to measure resistance. Check continuity of Black/Red wire between bulb socket and fuse panel terminal No. 15. Resistance should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is 0-1 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-1 ohm, replace SRS wiring harness. Ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected. Disconnect SRS Red 10-pin connector. Check continuity of Pink wire from pin No. 10 of SRS Red 10-pin connector to bulb socket. See Figure . Resistance reading should be 0-1 ohm. If reading is 0-1 ohm, go to next step. If reading is not 0-1 ohm, replace SRS wiring harness. Perform system operation check to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Check continuity of Brown wire from pin No. 4 of SRS Red 10-pin connector to vehicle ground. See Figure . Resistance reading should be 0-1 ohm. If reading is 0-1 ohm, replace SRS control unit. Perform system operation check to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- If reading is not 0-1 ohm, there is an open in Brown wire circuit from SRS Red 10-pin connector pin No. 4 to main ground connection on steering column support bracket. See Figure . Replace SRS wiring harness. Ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
