Engine Removal / Installation - 3.0L

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT -- 3.0L .
  3. Remove the hood.
  4. Remove the upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD UPPER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L , .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See AIR CLEANER OUTLET TUBE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L , .
    NOTE:
    • The fan clutch has left-hand threads.
  6. Remove the fan clutch and the fan blade as an assembly. See COOLING FAN AND CLUTCH REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 3.0L .
  7. Remove the drive belt. See DRIVE BELT REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L , .
  8. Remove the fan shroud.

  9. Remove the radiator. See RADIATOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 3.0L .
  10. Recover the A/C system. See A/C REFRIGERANT SYSTEM TESTS .
  11. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly. See A/C MANIFOLD AND TUBE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 3.0L .
  12. Disconnect the heater hoses.

  13. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly at the accumulator.

  14. Remove the nut and position the suction/discharge line aside.

  15. Remove the nut and position the line aside.

  16. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer.

  17. Remove the nuts and detach the ground wire and the wiring harness bracket.

    Tightening Torque: 10 Nm {89 ft-lbi} 

  18. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.

    Tightening Torque: 27 Nm {20 ft-lfi} 

  19. Remove the stud bolts.

    Tightening Torque: 47 Nm {35 ft-lbf} 

  20. Remove the bolt and position A/C compressor and A/C compressor mounting bracket aside as an assembly.

    • Remove the bolts.
    • Set the assembly aside.

    Tightening Torque: 47 Nm {35 ft-lfi} 

  21. Remove the nut and position the ground cable aside.

  22. Disconnect the two in-line electrical connectors.

  23. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF , .
  24. Disconnect the fuel lines. See FUEL LINE AND VAPOR LINE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTINGS , .
  25. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.

  26. Remove the nut and detach the wiring harness retainer.

    Tightening Torque: 10 Nm {89 ft-lbi} 

  27. Remove the stud bolt and the PCM ground strap.

    Tightening Torque: 10 Nm {89 ft-lbi} 

  28. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors, detach the wiring harness retainer and position aside.

  29. Disconnect both front heated oxygen sensors.

  30. Disconnect the vacuum line to the vacuum tank reservoir.

  31. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

  32. Raise the vehicle.
  33. Remove the left heated oxygen sensor. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION , .

  34. Disconnect the dual converter Y pipe from both exhaust manifolds. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD RIGHT HAND REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L , and EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEFT HAND REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
  35. Remove the starter motor and the starter grounding stud bolt. See STARTER MOTOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 3.0L .
  36. Detach the wiring harness retain from the transmission crossmember and disconnect the electrical connector.

    Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission 

  37. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector and remove the nut.

    • Route the wiring harness over the transmission.

    Tightening Torque: 30 Nm {22 ft-lbf} 

  38. Detach the wiring harness retainer. Disconnect the transmission electrical connectors.

  39. Detach the wiring harness retainer. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor sensor and transmission electrical connectors.

    NOTE:
    • Mark one stud and the flexplate for installation reference.
  40. Remove the torque converter nuts on automatic transmissions.

    • Remove the access plate.
    • Remove the four nuts.
  41. Disconnect the wire pushpin retainers.

  42. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.

  43. Remove the bolt.

    Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission 

  44. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector and remove the nut.

    • Route the wiring harness over the transmission.

      Tightening Torque: 30 Nm {22 ft-lfi} 

  45. Detach the wiring harness retainer. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector.

  46. Detach the wiring harness retainers. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor and transmission electrical connectors.

    All vehicles 

  47. Remove the nuts and position the fuel tube bracket aside.

    • Make sure all the transmission electrical connectors and wiring harness retainers are disconnected and route the wiring harness to the engine.

      Tightening Torque: 30 Nm {22 ft-lbf} 

  48. Remove the eight transmission-to-engine bolts.

  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50. Attach engine lifting eyes SST  .

  51. Remove the four nuts.

  52. Support the transmission.
  53. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  54. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
