Valve Clearance Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the front tire (RH).
  3. Remove the under cover.
  4. Remove the splash shield (RH).
  5. Remove the charge air cooler. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  6. Remove the high pressure fuel pump. (See HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  7. Remove the ignition coils. (See IGNITION COIL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  8. Disconnect the OCV connector.
  9. Disconnect the, CMP sensor connector.
  10. Disconnect the P/S oil pump connector.
  11. Remove the ventilation hose.
  12. Remove the cylinder head cover. (See CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL NOTE ).
  13. Measure the valve clearance.
    1. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise so that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke.
    2. Measure the valve clearance of location A shown in the figure.

      Standard valve clearance [Engine cold] 

      IN: 0.22-0.28 mm {0.0087-0.0110 in} 

      EX: 0.27-0.33 mm {0.0107-0.0129 in}

    3. If it is not within the specification, replace the tappet and adjust the valve clearance to the median value of the standard (See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT ).
      NOTE:
      • Make sure to note down the measured values for choosing the suitable replacement tappets.
    4. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 360°  so that the No. 4 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke.
    5. Measure the valve clearance of location B shown in the figure.

      Standard valve clearance [Engine cold] 

      IN: 0.22-0.28 mm {0.0087-0.0110 in} 

      EX: 0.27-0.33 mm {0.0107-0.0129 in} 

    6. If not within the specification, replace the tappet and adjust the valve clearance to the median value of the standard (See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT ).
  14. Install the cylinder head cover. (See CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL NOTE ).
  15. Install the ventilation hose.
  16. Connect the P/S oil pump connector.
  17. Connect the CMP sensor connector.
  18. Connect the OCV connector.
  19. Install the ignition coils. (See IGNITION COIL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  20. Install the high pressure fuel pump. (See HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  21. Install the charge air cooler. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  22. Install the splash shield (RH).
  23. Install the under cover.
  24. Install the front tire (RH).
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26. Bleed the air from the cooling system. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT ).
