DtcDriver-side AIR Bag Module
- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect clockspring short bar separator. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, and if DTC 6 was retrieved as a present malfunction, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, and if DTC 6 was retrieved as a past malfunctiongo to step 6. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring andgo to step 8. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Connect leads of Fuel And Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285 or 49 N088 0A0) to clockspring-to-air bag connector, terminals 3A and 3B at steering wheel. See Fig 1. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace driver-side air bag module andgo to step 8.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring-to-SAS unit air bag wiring harness and go to step 8.
- Connect leads of fuel and thermometer checker to lower clockspring 2-pin connector, terminals "A" and "B" at base of steering wheel. See Fig 1. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace clockspring andgo to step 8. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect SAS unit connector. See SAS UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect air bag harness connector, terminal 2D and lower clockspring connector, terminal "A" (Yellow/Red wire) and air bag harness connector, terminal 2G and lower clockspring connector, terminal "B" (Yellow/Black wire) for short to ground, power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Fig 1
. If air bag wiring harness is okay, replace SAS unit andgo to step 8. If air bag wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness andgo to step 8.
- Remove clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check clockspring continuity between specified terminals. See Fig 1. Continuity should exist as specified. If continuity exists as specified, go to next step. If continuity does not exist as specified, replace clockspring andgo to step 8.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect SAS unit connector. See SAS UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check wiring harness between SAS unit connector, terminal 2D and clockspring connector terminal "A" (Yellow/Red wire), and between SAS unit connector, terminal 2G and clockspring connector, terminal "B" (Yellow/Black wire) for short to ground, power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Fig 1
. If wiring harness is okay, replace driver-side air bag module andgo to step 8. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness andgo to step 8.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
