Removal And Installation: Transmission: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

All vehicles 

  1. NOTE: If removed, inspect the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Install the backing ring (7J324)
    2. Lubricate and install the seal (7D258)

      Material: Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (WSS-M2C938-A) (MERCON® LV,)

  2. Install the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes, the new bolt and the nut.

    1. Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)
    2. Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  3. Install the transmission fluid warmer bracket and nuts.

    Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  4. NOTE: Make sure that when installing the manual control lever, it is fully seated onto the manual control lever shaft. Damage to the manual control lever shaft will occur and the manual lever will come loose.
    NOTE: Make sure to hold the manual control lever while tightening the manual control lever nut or damage to the manual control lever and park components will occur.

    Install the manual control lever and nut.

    Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

  5. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

    1. Inspect the torque converter stud and flexplate for paint marks.
    2. Align the torque converter stud and flexplate hole near the paint marks to the 12 o'clock position.

  6. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  7. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.

    Using a transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  8. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  9. Position the transmission on the dowel pins and install the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  10. Install the LH transmission-to-engine bolts.

    1. If equipped, install the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.

    2. Install the ground cable and nut.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    3. Connect the wiring harness retainer.

  11. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Install the new torque converter nuts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  15. Install the catalytic converter bracket and the bolts.

    1. Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
    2. Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    1. Inspect the RH halfshaft seal surface.
    2. Inspect the dust shield.
    3. Inspect the differential side gear splines.

  16. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Install a new RH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal RH - FWD .

  17. NOTE: Do not fully install the shaft at this time.

    Using part: 4W1W-4N206-A, install the inboard splines of the RH halfshaft through the halfshaft seal protector and the new halfshaft seal.

  18. Install the RH halfshaft until the intermediate shaft bearing is centered in the intermediate shaft bearing support bracket.

  19. Install the new halfshaft retaining strap and the new halfshaft retaining strap nuts.

    Torque:Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm) | Stage 2: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm) | Stage 3: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  20. Install the LH catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .

    All vehicles 

  21. Inspect the halfshaft hub for wear or damage and install a new halfshaft, if necessary.

    1. Inspect the dust shield.
    2. Inspect the LH halfshaft seal surface.
    3. Inspect the differential side gear splines.

    Install the new inner halfshaft retaining circlip.

    Using part: AA5P-4N206-A, install the splines of the LH halfshaft through the halfshaft seal protector and the new halfshaft seal.

  25. NOTE: Insert shaft until circlip is fully seated. When checking if circlip is seated do not pull on CV joints or damage can result.
    NOTE: Pull on the inner CV joint to ensure the halfshaft circlip is seated properly.

    Insert the LH halfshaft until the halfshaft retaining clip is fully seated.

  26. Connect the transmission fluid cooler to transmission cooler bypass valve tube.

    2. Install the transmission support insulator bolts.

    4. Refer to: Battery Tray .

  59. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
  60. Fill the transmission with transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .
  61. After completing the repairs, perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure using a diagnostic scan tool.
  62. If a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
