Removal And Installation: Transmission: Removal

All vehicles 

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
2. Remove the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. REFER to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 .
3. Remove the battery tray. REFER to: Battery Tray .
4. Detach the wiring retainers and position aside the wiring harness.

5. Detach the cable retainer, remove the nuts and the battery tray support bracket.

6. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever, remove the bracket bolts and position aside the selector lever cable and bracket.

7. Remove the transmission fluid heater (if equipped) and thermal bypass valve bracket bolts.

8. Remove and discard the transmission fluid cooler tube bolts and remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transmission.

9. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

10. Remove the nut and position the transmission cooling tube bracket aside.

11. Detach the wiring harness connectors and position aside the wiring harness.

12. Remove the transmission fluid fill cap and vent tube.

14. Loosen the clamps, remove the nuts and remove the CAC tube.

17. Remove the wheels and tires. REFER to: Wheel and Tire .
18. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

19. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

20. Remove the bolts and the oil filter adapter.

21. Remove the starter. REFER to: Starter Motor 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS) . REFER to: Starter Motor 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 .
22. Remove the starter insulator.

23. NOTE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.
    NOTE: Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

24. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

26. NOTE: The front suspension height sensor must be disconnected from the lower control arm prior to servicing suspension components or damage to the suspension height sensor and/or the vehicle dynamic suspension system may occur. The sensor will need to be recalibrated after reassembly.

    If equipped, remove the bolt, disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring harness retainers.

27. Remove the bolts and the front support bar.

28. Disconnect the transmission fluid auxiliary pump electrical connector.

29. Remove the LH halfshaft assembly. REFER to: Front Halfshaft LH .

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

30. NOTE: The front suspension height sensor must be disconnected from the lower control arm prior to servicing suspension components or damage to the suspension height sensor and/or the vehicle dynamic suspension system may occur. The sensor will need to be recalibrated after reassembly.

    If equipped, remove the bracket bolt.

31. NOTE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle can result.
    NOTE: Use care when installing the tie-rod end separator or damage to the outer tie-rod end boot may occur.

    Remove and discard the RH tie rod end nut. Disconnect the RH tie rod end from the knuckle. Use the General Equipment: Tie Rod End Remover

32. NOTE: Do not use a prying device to open the slot in the knuckle to separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle assembly. Damage to the knuckle assembly may occur.
    NOTE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint boot may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.
    NOTE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal and/or CV joint boot may occur.

    Remove and discard the RH lower ball joint nut and bolt and disconnect the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.

33. Remove the RH brake hose bolt.

34. Remove and discard the halfshaft bracket and the nuts.

39. NOTE: Use caution when lowering the vehicle after the special tool is installed. If the vehicle is lowered onto the special tool, damage to the special tool or the vehicle can occur.

    Install the special tool and support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1554 Engine Support Bar.

45. Separate the transmission from the engine and install the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

46. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes by hand. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
