Self-Diagnostic System

NOTE: Before beginning self-diagnostics, perform TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
NOTE: Test procedures are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester. Generic scan tools may not have the capability of performing all the same functions. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
NOTE: Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module is referred to as a Stability Assist Module (SAM) if vehicle is equipped with traction control and stability assist. Next Generation Speed Control (NGSC) servo is an integral part of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Message center module is an integral part of the instrument cluster. Steering Column Lock Module (SCLM) may also be referred to as a Steering Column Lock Unit (SCLU) or steering column lock.
NOTE: Remote Emergency Satellite Cellular Unit (RESCU) module, Driver's Seat Module (DSM) and Steering Column Lock Module (SCLM) will fail data link diagnostic test if vehicle is not equipped with that module(s). Vehicles with voice activated cellular phone are equipped with a RESCU module. Vehicles with memory seats are equipped with a Driver's Seat Module (DSM). Vehicles with a manual transmission are equipped with a Steering Column Lock Unit (SCLU).

Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article. If NGS tester displays CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article.

If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Instrument Cluster Module (MCM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Message Center Module (MCM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Front Electronic Module (FEM), perform TEST B: NO COMMUNICATION WITH FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Rear Electronic Module (REM), perform TEST C: NO COMMUNICATION WITH REAR ELECTRONIC MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Remote Emergency Satellite Cellular Unit (RESCU), perform TEST AA: NO COMMUNICATION WITH REMOTE EMERGENCY SATELLITE CELLULAR UNIT  under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Restraints Control Module (RCM), repair restraint system concern. If NGS tester displays SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record DTCs from all modules. Erase DTCs from all modules. Perform instrument cluster, MCM, FEM, RESCU and REM self-test. Perform appropriate test under SYSTEM TESTS in accordance with DTC retrieved. See FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  , INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  , MESSAGE CENTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  , REAR ELECTRONIC MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  and/or REMOTE EMERGENCY SATELLITE CELLULAR UNIT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. Codes listed in these tables are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article. If self-test is passed and no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  under SYSTEM TESTS.

(2) Using NGS tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Front Electronic Module (FEM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace FEM.
(3) Not used on this vehicle.
(4) Configure Front Electronic Module (FEM). See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If module was configured correctly, replace FEM and repeat self-test.

(2) Replace instrument cluster module.
(3) Using NGS tester, retrieve and record all continuous DTCs. Perform instrument cluster self-test. If DTC B1342 still exists, replace instrument cluster.
(4) Configure Instrument Cluster Module (instrument cluster). See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If module was configured correctly, replace instrument cluster and repeat self-test.

(3) Using new generation star tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Message Center Module (MCM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace instrument cluster.
(4) Configure Instrument Cluster Module (instrument cluster). See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If module was configured correctly, replace instrument cluster and repeat self-test.

(2) Using new generation star tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Rear Electronic Module (REM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace REM.
(3) Configure Rear Electronic Module (REM). See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If module was configured correctly, replace REM and repeat self-test.

(3) Using new generation star tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Remote Emergency Satellite Cellular Unit (RESCU) self-test. If DTC B2141 is retrieved again, replace RESCU.
(4) Configure Remote Emergency Satellite Cellular Unit (RESCU). See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If module was configured correctly, replace RESCU and repeat self-test.
