Test K: Brake Warning Indicator Always On

NOTE: Ensure parking brake is released and brake fluid reservoir is full.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command WARNING LAMPS AND CHIMES. Trigger ALL LAMPS to ON, then OFF. BRAKE warning indicator should illuminate when triggered ON and should not illuminate when triggered OFF. If BRAKE warning indicator operates as specified, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not operate as specified, replace instrument cluster.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect brake fluid level switch harness connector C124. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If BRAKE warning indicator is on, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator is not on, replace brake fluid level switch.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect parking brake switch harness connector C306. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If BRAKE warning indicator is on, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator is not on, replace parking brake switch.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using NGS tester, monitor Front Electronic Module (FEM) PID FLUID_1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a fused jumper wire, connect brake fluid level switch harness connector terminals No. 1 (White/Red wire) and No. 2 (Black/Blue wire). With jumper wire connected, PID should display ON. Without jumper wire connected, PID should display OFF. If PID displays as specified, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If PID does not display as specified, remove jumper wire and go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect FEM 20-pin harness connector C201f. FEM is located behind driver's side kick panel. See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and Black/Green wire terminal at parking brake switch harness connector. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace FEM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Green wire between parking brake switch and FEM.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect FEM harness connector C201c. FEM is located behind driver's side kick panel. See Figure . Measure between ground and brake fluid level switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (White/Red wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in White/Red wire between brake fluid level switch and FEM. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace FEM.
