Test X: Engine Temperature Indicator Never/Always On

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous instrument cluster DTCs. Clear instrument cluster DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If no instrument cluster DTCs are not retrieved, go to next step. If instrument cluster DTC U1073 is retrieved, go to step 3 . If any other instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problem. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command WARNING LAMPS AND CHIMES. Trigger ALL LAMPS ON, then OFF. Engine temperature indicator should illuminate when triggered ON and should not illuminate when triggered OFF. If engine temperature indicator operate as specified, perform TEST E: TEMPERATURE GAUGE INACCURATE . If engine temperature indicator does not operate as specified, replace instrument cluster.
Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. Clear PCM DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform PCM self-test. If any PCM DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problems. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V (GASOLINE) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no PCM DTCs are retrieved, problem may be intermittent or a module communication problem may exists between PCM and instrument cluster.
