Test E: Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous instrument cluster DTCs. Clear instrument cluster DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If no instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If any instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problems. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command ENGINE COOLANT CONTROL. Trigger ENGCOOLNT ON. Scroll ENGCOOLNT to 0 percent, 50 percent, then 100 percent while observing temperature gauge. Engine coolant temperature gauge should display cold at 0 percent, half at 50 percent and full hot at 100 percent. If coolant temperature gauge operates as specified, temperature gauge is operating properly at this time. Check engine cooling system for other possible problems. If temperature gauge does not operate as specified, replace instrument cluster.
