Test Z: Odometer Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous instrument cluster DTCs. Clear instrument cluster DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If instrument cluster DTC B2143 is retrieved, go to next step. If no instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, go to step  3 . If instrument cluster DTC U1123 is retrieved, repair Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) system concern. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If any other instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problem. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If odometer illuminates, go to next step. If odometer does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster.
  3. Test drive vehicle while observing speedometer operation. If speedometer operates properly, problem may be intermittent or a module communication problem may exists between ABS control module and instrument cluster. For module communications concerns, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article. If speedometer does not operate properly, perform TEST G: SPEEDOMETER INOPERATIVE  .
