Test S: Variable Assist Power Steering Circuit Failure
- Check Connector Disconnect Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) solenoid connector. Solenoid is located right rear of engine compartment. Check connector for corrosion, bent pins and damaged wires. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is worn or damaged, repair as necessary and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check VAPS Solenoid Measure resistance between VAPS solenoid terminals. If resistance is 4-11 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 4-11 ohms, replace VAPS solenoid. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check For Shorted Solenoid Measure resistance between solenoid housing and either VAPS solenoid terminal. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, replace VAPS solenoid. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 114 Ensure VAPS is disconnected. Disconnect Vehicle Dynamics Module (VDM). VDM is located in trunk, behind package tray. Install Breakout Box (007-00033), leaving VDM disconnected. Measure resistance of Light Blue/Yellow wire between breakout box test pin No. 31 and VAPS solenoid connector. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Yellow wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 115 Measure resistance of Light Green/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 55 and VAPS solenoid connector. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Light Green/Black wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 430 Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 60 (Gray Wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 114 For Short To Ground Measure resistance between test pins No. 31 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue/Yellow wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 115 For Short To Ground Measure resistance between test pins No. 55 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Black wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 114 For Short To Voltage Measure voltage between test pins No. 31 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair short to voltage in Light Blue/Yellow wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check Circuit No. 115 For Short To Voltage Measure voltage between test pins No. 55 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair short to voltage in Light Green/Black wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check VDM Ensure VAPS solenoid is disconnected. Connect VDM to breakout box. Hook-up New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select. Select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE. Select ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Select VAPS II OUTPUT PULSE CONTROL. Press trigger and scroll VAPS II OUTPUT to 75 percent. Command VAPS II OUTPUT PULSE CONTROL. Measure VAPS II output between test pins No. 31 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 55 (Light Green/Black wire) at breakout box. Output should vary according to chosen 75 percent duty cycle (voltage greater then 10 volts). If output is as specified, go to next step. If output is not as specified, replace VDM. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
- Check VAPS Solenoid Reconnect VAPS solenoid. Command VAPS II OUTPUT PULSE CONTROL as in step 11). Measure voltage between test pins No. 31 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 55 (Light Green/Black wire) at breakout box. If voltage pulses, no problem is indicated at this time. Fault may be intermittent. See WIGGLE TEST and SEMI-ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES . If voltage does not pulse, replace VAPS solenoid. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
