Riding Height

NOTE: Riding height adjustment procedure must be used before wheel alignment is performed. Also, use this procedure if height sensor, sensor bracket or Vehicle Dynamics Module (VDM) is replaced. Riding height can be adjusted without adjusting height sensor mounting brackets or sensor ball studs by using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester (007-00500) to reprogram VDM.
  1. Position vehicle on a level surface. Connect battery charger to vehicle battery. Ensure air suspension switch, located on left side of trunk is in ON position. Hook-up New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS.
  2. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select. Select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE.
  3. Select DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES. Select FUNCTION TEST. Select RIDE HEIGHT CALIBRATION. Prepare vehicle as specified on NGS tester display. NGS will now display RUNNING ACCURATE TRIM TEST indicating that NGS tester is commanding vehicle to its nominal riding height.
  4. When nominal riding height is reached, measure vertical distance from bottom edge of wheel to wheel well lip at each wheel. NGS tester will display nominal wheel lip opening until a different number is entered. See NOMINAL WHEEL LIP OPENING SPECIFICATIONS TABLE.
    NOMINAL WHEEL LIP OPENING SPECIFICATIONS

    Application In. (mm)
    Front 25 (635)
    Rear 24.25 (616)
  5. No adjustment will occur if nominal values are entered. Enter measurement into NGS tester using tester thumbwheel. Select each corner by pressing trigger button. When all 4 corner wheel lip opening measurements have been entered, press DONE.
  6. NOTE: VDM limits the amount or ride height adjustment that can be made electronically. On 1996 models, if after performing procedure, riding height is not to specification, go to next step. On 1997 models, if after performing procedure, riding height is not to specification, go to step 9).
  7. NGS tester will display DOWNLOADING CALIBRATION, followed by RUNNING ACCURATE TRIM, followed by CALIBRATION COMPLETE. When calibration is complete, measure each wheel lip opening to verify riding height.
  8. Adjust front riding height by loosening ball stud nut and sliding ball stud. See Fig 1 . Moving ball stud down will increase ride height. After adjustment is made, tighten ball stud nut.
  9. Adjust rear riding height by loosening ball stud nut and sliding ball stud. See Fig 2 . Moving ball stud up will increase ride height. After adjustment is made, tighten ball stud nut. Go to step 10).
  10. Adjust riding height by loosening ball stud nut and sliding ball stud. See Fig 2 . Moving ball stub down will raise front and lower rear of vehicle. Moving ball stud up will have reverse affect on vehicle riding height. After adjustment has been made, tighten ball stud and nut.
  11. After making ball stud adjustments, rerun the ride height calibration procedure with NGS to fine tune adjustment.
