Test L: Shock Actuator Short To Battery

NOTE: Shock actuator is an integral part of shock. If actuator is defective, replace shock assembly.
  1. Check Shock Actuator Connector  Disconnect suspect shock actuator connector. Check connector for corrosion, bent pins and damaged wires. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is worn or damaged, repair as necessary and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  2. Check Shock Actuator Resistance  Measure resistance between shock actuator terminals. If resistance is 15-21 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 15-21 ohms, replace shock assembly. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION  .
  3. Check For Open Circuit  Measure resistance between ground and Gray wire at suspect shock actuator connector. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in Gray wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  4. Check For Short To Voltage  Disconnect Vehicle Dynamics Module (VDM). VDM is located in trunk, behind package tray. Disconnect suspect shock actuator connector. Measure voltage between ground and appropriate wire at suspect shock actuator connector. See SHOCK ACTUATOR TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION  table. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is one volt or more, repair short to voltage in suspect shock actuator wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  5. Check For Open Circuit  Install Breakout Box (007-00033), leaving VDM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin and suspect air spring solenoid connector as follows:
    • Left Front Shock Actuator Measure resistance of White/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 51 and left front shock actuator connector.
    • Left Rear Shock Actuator Measure resistance of White/Orange wire between breakout box test pin No. 54 and left rear shock actuator connector.
    • Right Front Shock Actuator Measure resistance of White/Red wire between breakout box test pin No. 53 and right front shock actuator connector.
    • Right Rear Shock Actuator

Measure resistance of White wire between breakout box test pin No. 52 and right rear shock actuator connector. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open circuit in suspect shock actuator wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .

  6. Check Circuit No. 430  Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 60 (Gray Wire) at breakout box. If resistance 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  7. Check VDM  Connect VDM to breakout box. Hook-up New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select. Select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE. Select ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Select SEMI-ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL. On 1996 models, select LFSHOCK, RFSHOCK, LRSHOCK or RRSHOCK. On 1997 models, select LFSH.SOFT, RFSH.SOFT, LRSH.SOFT or RRSH.SOFT. Command SOFT: ON. Measure voltage between test pin No. 60 (Gray wire) and suspect shock actuator test pin. See SHOCK ACTUATOR TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION TABLE in step 4). If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace VDM. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION  .
  8. Check Circuit Voltage  Reconnect suspect shock actuator connector. Command SOFT: ON as in step 7). Again, measure voltage between test pin No. 60 (Gray wire) and suspect shock actuator test pin. See SHOCK ACTUATOR TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION TABLE in step 4). If battery voltage is present, no problem is indicated at this time. Fault may be intermittent. See WIGGLE TEST and SEMI-ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES  . If battery voltage is not present, replace shock assembly. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
