Test G: Air Spring Solenoid Short To Battery Or Open Circuit
- Check Air Spring Solenoid Connector
Disconnect suspect air spring solenoid connector. See Figure or Figure . Check connector for corrosion, bent pins and damaged wires. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is worn or damaged, repair as necessary and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . - Check Solenoid
Measure resistance between suspect air spring solenoid terminals. If resistance is 14-18 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 14-18 ohms, replace solenoid and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . - Check For Open Circuit
Disconnect Vehicle Dynamics Module (VDM). VDM is located in trunk, behind package tray. Ensure suspect air spring solenoid is disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and Gray wire at air spring solenoid connector. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION . - Check For Short To Voltage
Measure voltage between ground and appropriate wire at suspect air solenoid connector. See AIR SPRING SOLENOID TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION TABLE. If voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to voltage. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. - Check For Open Circuit
Install Breakout Box (007-00033), leaving VDM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin and suspect air spring solenoid connector as follows:- Left Front Solenoid (1996 Only) Measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire between breakout box test pin No. 21 and left front air spring solenoid connector.
- Left Rear Solenoid Measure resistance of Purple/Light Green wire between breakout box test pin No. 41 and left rear air spring solenoid connector.
- Right Front Solenoid (1996 Only) Measure resistance of Orange/Red wire between breakout box test pin No. 17 and right front air spring solenoid connector.
- Right Rear Solenoid
Measure resistance of Light Blue/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 38 and right rear air spring solenoid connector. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open circuit in suspect air spring solenoid wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
- Check VDM
Connect VDM to breakout box. Hook-up New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select. Select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE. Select ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Select AIR SUSPENSION CONTROLS. Command LF.SOL (1996 Only), RF.SOL (1996 Only), RR.SOL or RF.SOL ON. Measure voltage between Gray wire and appropriate wire at suspect air solenoid connector. See AIR SPRING SOLENOID TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION TABLE under step 4). Battery voltage should be present with solenoid on and less than battery voltage with solenoid off. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace VDM. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. - Check Solenoid
Reconnect air spring solenoid. Command LF.SOL (1996 Only), RF.SOL (1996 Only), RR.SOL or RF.SOL ON as in step 6). Battery voltage should be present with solenoid on and zero volts with solenoid off. If voltage is as specified, no problem is indicated at this time. Fault may be intermittent. See WIGGLE TEST and SEMI-ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES . If voltage is not as specified, replace air spring solenoid. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION .
