Test D: Height Sensor Signal Open

  1. Check Sensor Connector

Disconnect suspect height sensor connector. See Figure or Figure . Check connector for corrosion, bent pins and damaged wires. If connectors are okay, go to next step. If connector is worn or damaged, repair as necessary and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  2. Check For Open Circuit To Sensors

Disconnect Vehicle Dynamics Module (VDM) 60-pin connector. VDM is located in trunk, behind package tray. Install Breakout Box (007-00033), leaving VDM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin and suspect height sensor connector as follows:
    • Left Front Sensor Measure resistance of Pink/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 27 and left front height sensor connector.
    • Left Rear Sensor Measure resistance of Pink/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 5 and left rear height sensor connector.
    • Right Front Sensor Measure resistance of Tan wire between breakout box test pin No. 9 and right front height sensor connector.
    • Right Rear Sensor

Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 43 and right rear height sensor connector. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open circuit in suspect wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .

  3. Check Circuit No. 426

Measure resistance of Red/Black wire between breakout box test pin No. 15 and suspect sensor connector. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in Red/Black wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  4. Check Circuit No. 430

Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 60 (Gray Wire) at breakout box. If resistance 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is 3 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  5. Check For Short To Ground

Measure resistance between test pins No. 15 (Red/Black wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Black wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  6. Check Circuit No. 432

Measure resistance between test pins No. 46 (Black/Pink wire) and No. 60 (Gray wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Pink wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  7. Check For Short Between Circuits

Measure resistance between test pins No. 15 (Red/Black wire) and No. 46 (Black/Pink wire) at breakout box. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit between Red/Black wire and Black/Pink wire. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  8. Check Circuit No. 432

Measure resistance of Black/Pink wire between height sensor connector and test pin No. 46 at breakout box. If resistance is 3 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in Black/Pink wire and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  .
  9. Check Sensor Input Voltage

Connect VDM to breakout box. Hook-up New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select. Select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE. Select ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Select AIR SUSPENSION CONTROLS. Command HGT POWER: ON. Measure voltage between Black/Pink wire and Red/Black wire at height sensor connector. If voltage is 4.8-5.2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.8-5.2 volts, replace VDM and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  10. Check Sensor Signal Voltage Range

Reconnect suspect height sensor. Command HGT POWER: ON as in step 9). Measure voltage between breakout box test pin No. 46 (Black/Pink wire) and suspect height sensor test pin. See HEIGHT SENSOR TEST PIN IDENTIFICATION TABLE  . Collapse and expand height sensor while observing DVOM. If voltage changes from .5-4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not change from .5-4.5 volts, replace height sensor and repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION  .
  11. Check Parameter Identification (PID) Values

This test is used to verify operation of input circuitry to VDM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Rotate dial (on scan tester) to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, and press trigger to select and advance to next screen. Highlight and select VDM-VEHICLE DYNAMICS MODULE. Highlight and select menu item PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD. Highlight and select LFHGT, RFHGT, LRHGT and RRHGT PID acronyms. Actuate sensor from maximum to minimum positions and observe PID values. If PID value changes as sensor is actuated, no problem is indicated at this time. Fault may be intermittent. See WIGGLE TEST and SEMI-ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES  . If PID value does not change, replace VDM. Repeat ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and PNEUMATIC TEST under DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE  . Adjust riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION  .
