Installation [09/2014 - 11/2017]: Procedure

  1. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove any old seal packing remaining on the sealing surfaces before applying seal packing.
    2. Clean the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover sub-assembly, cylinder head sub-assembly, cylinder head LH and cylinder block sub-assembly, and confirm that no oil, moisture or other foreign matter is on the surfaces.

      *1 Cylinder Head Sub-assembly, Cylinder Head LH and Cylinder Block Sub-assembly *2 Timing Chain Cover Sub-assembly
      Area to be cleaned and degreased - -
      NOTE:

      Be sure to clean the contact surfaces, especially the surfaces (A) shown in the illustration.

    3. Install a new gasket.
    4. Apply seal packing in a continuous line to the locations shown in the illustration.

      *a 3.0 mm (0.118 in.) or more

      Seal Packing

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent

      Seal Diameter

      3.0 mm (0.118 in.) or more

      NOTE:
      • If there is oil on the contact surfaces, wipe them with an oil-free cloth before applying seal packing.
      • Check the bolts and bolt holes, and clean them.
      • Install the timing chain cover sub-assembly within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 10 minutes of applying seal packing.
      • Do not add engine oil for at least 2 hours after installing the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
      • Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
    5. Apply seal packing in a continuous line to the timing chain cover sub-assembly as shown in the following illustration.

      Seal Packing

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing 1282B, Three Bond 1282B or equivalent

      NOTE:
      • If there is oil on the contact surfaces, wipe them with an oil-free cloth before applying seal packing.
      • Check the bolts and bolt holes, and clean them.
      • Install the timing chain cover sub-assembly within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 10 minutes of applying seal packing.
      • Do not add the engine oil for at least 2 hours after installing the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
      • Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
    6. Align the drive rotor spline and the crankshaft as shown in the illustration, and install the timing chain cover sub-assembly.

    7. Temporarily install the timing chain cover sub-assembly with the 25 bolts and 2 nuts.

      Item Specified Condition
      Bolt (A) 50 mm (1.97 in.)
      Bolt (B) 28 mm (1.102 in.)
      Bolt (C) 55 mm (2.17 in.)
      NOTE:

      Make sure that there is no oil on the bolt threads.

    8. Fully tighten the 3 bolts shown in the illustration.

      Bolt (A) 

      Torque: 43 N.m (438 kgf/cm, 32 ft.lbf) 

      Bolt (B) 

      Torque: 21 N.m (214 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

    9. Fully tighten the 3 bolts shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 21 N.m (214 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

    10. Fully tighten the 7 bolts and 2 nuts shown in the illustration.

      *a Nut

      Torque: 21 N.m (214 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Tighten the bolts and nuts from top to bottom as shown in the illustration.

    11. Fully tighten the 12 bolts shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 21 N.m (214 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Tighten the bolts from bottom to top as shown in the illustration.

    12. Install the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf) 

  2. INSTALL TIMING GEAR CASE OR TIMING CHAIN CASE OIL SEAL 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [09/2014 - 10/2015] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [10/2015 - 11/2017]

  3. INSTALL SPARK PLUG TUBE GASKET 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 47

  4. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 49

  5. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  6. INSTALL NO. 2 FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
