Installation [05/2019 - ]: Procedure

  1. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CASE PLUG ASSEMBLY 
    1. Coat the O-ring with ATF.
    2. Install the transmission case plug assembly to the automatic transaxle assembly.
  2. INSTALL WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. Install the wiring harness connector to the automatic transaxle assembly.
    2. Install and tighten the 2 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 11.3 N.m (115 kgf/cm, 8 ft.lbf)

  3. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf/cm, 9 ft.lbf) 

  4. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET 
    1. Install the 2 wire harness clamp brackets to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 19 N.m (194 kgf/cm, 14 ft.lbf) 

  5. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Temporarily install the rear engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 3 bolts.

    2. Tighten the 3 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 45 N.m (459 kgf/cm, 33 ft.lbf) 

  6. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    NOTE:

    The bolt has 2 types.

    BOLT LENGTH:

    Item Length
    for Type A 26.5 mm (1.04 in.)
    for Type B 25 mm (0.984 in.)
    1. for Type A:

      1. Clean the bolts and the installation holes in the engine mounting bracket LH.
      2. Apply adhesive to the 4 bolts.

        Adhesive

        Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

      3. Temporarily install the engine mounting bracket LH with the 4 bolts.
      4. Tighten the 4 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

        Torque: 64 N.m (653 kgf/cm, 47 ft.lbf) 

    2. for Type B:
      1. Temporarily install the engine mounting bracket LH with the 4 bolts.
      2. Tighten the 4 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

        Torque: 41 N.m (418 kgf/cm, 30 ft.lbf) 

  7. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Temporarily install the front engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 4 bolts.

    2. Tighten the 4 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      for bolt A, B, C 

      Torque: 64 N.m (653 kgf/cm, 47 ft.lbf) 

      for bolt B 

      Torque: 13.5 N.m (138 kgf/cm, 10 ft.lbf) 

  8. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting insulator to the rear engine mounting bracket with the through bolt

      Torque: 95 N.m (969 kgf/cm, 70 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:
      • Align the protrusion of the rear engine mounting bracket with the alignment mark of the rear engine mounting insulator.
      • While holding the nut in place, tighten the through bolt.
  9. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Align the matchmark on the transaxle housing with the one on the torque converter assembly and engage the splines of the input shaft with the turbine runner splines.

      NOTE:
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    2. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° and engage the splines of the stator shaft with the stator assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    3. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° again, align the matchmark on the torque converter assembly with the one on the transaxle housing and insert the groove of the torque converter assembly into the key of the oil pump drive gear.

      NOTE:
      • Do not push the torque converter assembly excessively when rotating it.
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    4. Clean the drive plate and torque converter assembly set bolt holes.
    5. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure the dimension A between the automatic transaxle assembly contact surface of the engine assembly*a and the torque converter assembly contact surfaces of the drive plate*b.

    6. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure the dimension B shown in the illustration and check that the dimension B is more than dimension A, which was measured in the previous step.

      Standard

      A + 1 mm (0.0394 in.) or more

      NOTE:
      • Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
      • If the automatic transaxle assembly is installed to the engine assembly with the torque converter assembly not sufficiently inserted, the torque converter assembly may be damaged.
      • Do not include the thickness of the set block.
  10. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the crankshaft that contacts the torque converter assembly centerpiece.

      Clutch spline grease

      Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent

      Maximum grease amount

      Approximately 1 g (0.0353 oz.)

    2. While keeping the engine and automatic transaxle assembly horizontal, align the knock pins with the holes in the automatic transaxle assembly and temporarily install the 9 bolts shown in the illustration.

      NOTE:
      • Confirm that the 2 knock pins are installed to the transaxle contact surface of the engine cylinder block before installing the automatic transaxle assembly.
      • Do not forcibly pry on the automatic transaxle assembly.
      • Check that the drive plate rotates smoothly after installation of the automatic transaxle assembly.
      • Make sure that the contact surfaces of the engine assembly and automatic transaxle assembly are flat against each other before temporarily install the bolts.
      • Make sure that the wire harness or other similar items are not pinched between the contact surfaces.
      • In order to protect the automatic transaxle oil pan sub-assembly, place attachments on the transmission jack.
      • Make sure that the attachments and automatic transaxle oil pan sub-assembly are centered on the transmission jack.
      • To prevent the automatic transaxle oil pan sub-assembly from being deformed, do not place any attachments under the automatic transaxle oil pan sub-assembly.
      • Secure the automatic transaxle assembly to the transmission jack using a belt, etc. to prevent it from falling.
    3. Temporarily install the engine mounting bracket LH with the through bolt and nut.

  11. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Temporarily install the front engine mounting insulator with the through bolt and nut.

  12. INSTALL FRONT CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the front crossmember with the 6 bolts.

      for bolt A 

      Torque: 99 N.m (1010 kgf/cm, 73 ft.lbf) 

      for bolt B 

      Torque: 95 N.m (969 kgf/cm, 70 ft.lbf)

  13. TIGHTEN FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Tighten the through bolt and nut of the front engine mounting insulator.

      Torque: 145 N.m (1479 kgf/cm, 107 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      While holding the nut in place, tighten the through bolt.

  14. TIGHTEN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Tighten the 9 bolts of the automatic transaxle assembly.

      for bolt A 

      Torque: 43 N.m (438 kgf/cm, 32 ft.lbf) 

      for bolt B 

      Torque: 46 N.m (469 kgf/cm, 34 ft.lbf) 

      for bolt C 

      Torque: 64 N.m (653 kgf/cm, 47 ft.lbf) 

  15. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [10/2014 - ]

  16. TIGHTEN ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Tighten the engine mounting insulator LH with the through bolt and nut.

      Torque: 56 N.m (571 kgf/cm, 41 ft.lbf) 

  17. REMOVE ENGINE SUPPORT BRIDGE 
    1. Remove SST from the vehicle body.
      NOTE:

      Prevent SST from contacting the vehicle body or windshield.

  18. CONNECT RADIATOR RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 58

  19. REMOVE ENGINE HANGER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and No. 1 engine hanger and No. 2 engine hanger.

  20. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the transmission control cable assembly to the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket with a new clip.
    2. Turn the control shaft lever clockwise until it stops, and then turn it counterclockwise 2 notches.

    3. Connect the transmission control cable assembly to the control shaft lever with the nut.

      Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf/cm, 9 ft.lbf) 

  21. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Connect the ECM connector and lower the lever.

      NOTE:
      • When connecting a connector, make sure that dirt, water and other foreign matter is not stuck between the connector and ECM.
      • Make sure that the lever is securely lowered.
    2. Connect the 2 clamps and wire harness.
    3. Connect the wire harness to the body with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.4 N.m (86 kgf/cm, 74 in.lbf) 

    4. Attach the 5 wire harness clamps and connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    5. Connect the connector to the wiring harness connector and turn the lock lever and secure the connector with the lock lever.
    6. Connect the ground cable with the bolt.

      Torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

  22. CONNECT TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Temporarily install the transmission oil cooler to the front engine mounting bracket with the 2 bolts.
    2. Tighten the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 13.5 N.m (138 kgf/cm, 10 ft.lbf) 

    3. Connect the oil cooler inlet hose and oil cooler outlet hose, and slide the 2 clips to secure them.
      NOTE:
      • Make sure to insert the oil cooler inlet hose and oil cooler outlet hose until the spool fitting so that the marking is facing the front of the vehicle.
      • Make sure to install the hose clips in a direction that does not interfere with other parts.
      • Make sure to install the hose clips so that the spool fitting is not overlapped.
    4. Install the clamp to the transmission breather hose sub-assembly and No. 5 water by-pass hose.
  23. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [09/2016 - ]

  24. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY SETTING BOLT 
    1. Remove any adhesive remaining the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.
    2. Apply a few drops of adhesive to 2 or 3 threads at the tip of each of the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.

      Adhesive

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

    3. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the installation locations of the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts and install each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley with SST.
      • SST: 09213-54015 
      • SST: 09330-00021 

      Torque: 41 N.m (418 kgf/cm, 30 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      • First install the black-colored bolt, and then the remaining 5 silver-colored bolts.
      • Part number of installation bolt for SST (crankshaft pulley holding tool): 91551-80650 (quantity: 2)
  25. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing under cover.
  26. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier caliper, measure the free length of the compression spring.

      Minimum length

      41.5 mm (1.63 in.)

      If the length is less than the minimum, replace the compression spring.

    2. Using a wire brush, remove any foreign matter from the gasket installation surface.
    3. Using a plastic-faced hammer and wooden block, tap in a new gasket until its surface is flush with the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Be sure to install the gasket so that it faces the correct direction.
      • Do not reuse the gasket.
      • Do not damage the gasket.
      • When connecting the front exhaust pipe assembly, do not push in the gasket with the front exhaust pipe assembly.
    4. Install the front exhaust pipe sub-assembly to the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly with the 2 compression springs and 2 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N.m (438 kgf/cm, 32 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      After installation, check that the space between the flanges of the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly and front exhaust pipe sub-assembly is consistent front-to-rear and left-to-right.

    5. Install a new gasket to the front exhaust pipe sub-assembly.
    6. Connect the front exhaust pipe sub-assembly to the front No. 2 exhaust pipe sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N.m (438 kgf/cm, 32 ft.lbf) 

  27. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [05/2019 - ]

  28. INSTALL NO. 2 AIR CLEANER HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 9

  29. INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 10

  30. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  31. INSTALL AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly.
  32. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 11

  33. INSTALL OUTER COWL TOP PANEL 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 19

  34. INSTALL SUSPENSION TOWER DAMPER 
  35. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND LINK ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [10/2014 - ]

  36. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  37. INITIALIZATION AFTER RECONNECTING BATTERY TERMINAL 

    Refer to WORK PROCEDURE [05/2019 - ]

    HINT: 

    When disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, there is an automatic learning function that completes learning when the respective system is used.

  38. ADD SPECIFIED AMOUNT OF FLUID 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5 [05/2019 - 07/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5 [07/2020 - ]

  39. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  40. ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 

    Refer to ADJUSTMENT [05/2019 - 07/2020] , or refer to ADJUSTMENT [07/2020 - ]

  41. INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  42. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK 
    1. Start the engine. Make sure that there are no oil leaks from the areas that were worked on.
  43. INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 98

  44. INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 97

  45. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER 

    for Sport Package:

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 100

    except Sport Package:

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 99

  46. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  47. CHECK AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SYSTEM 
    NOTE:

    If automatic transmission parts have been replaced, refer to the Parts Replacement Compensation Table to determine if any additional operations are necessary.
