Pad, Instrument Panel: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove both instrument panel speakers. Refer to SPEAKER, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove both of the A-pillar trim panels. Refer to PANEL, A-PILLAR TRIM, REMOVAL .

  4. Using a trim stick or equivalent, disengage the retaining clips securing both of the front door sill scuff panels to the door sill and lower B-pillars.
  5. Remove the front door sill scuff panel (1).

  6. Release wire harness and disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from both sides of the instrument panel (1).
  7. Remove defroster grille. Refer to GRILLE, DEFROSTER, REMOVAL .
  8. Remove both lower silencer panels. Refer to PANEL, SILENCER, LOWER, REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the floor console. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the steering column. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL .
  11. Remove the cluster. Refer to REMOVAL .
  12. Remove glove box assembly. Refer to GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVAL .

  13. Located under the passenger side of dash, disconnect the body to dash wire harness connectors (1).
  14. Disconnect the coaxial connectors (2), if so equipped.
  15. Remove the Instrument Panel Center Bezel. Refer to BEZEL, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CENTER, REMOVAL .
  16. Remove the radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL .
  17. Remove the security gateway module. Refer to MODULE, SECURITY GATEWAY (SGW), REMOVAL .

  18. Remove the fasteners (2) and remove the radio support bracket (1).
  19. Disconnect the sun sensor and ICS wire harness retainers from the instrument panel pad.
  20. If equipped, remove the amplifier. Refer to AMPLIFIER, REMOVAL .

  21. Reach through and above the glove box opening (4) of the instrument panel to access and remove the two screws (5) that secure the Passenger AirBag (PAB) (2) lower mounting bracket to the instrument panel structural support (3).
  22. Still reaching through the glove box opening, disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the PAB pigtail wire harness connector (1).

  23. Using a trim stick or equivalent, remove the center speaker cover (1).
  24. Remove the fasteners (2).
  25. Open storage bin and remove the rubber mat (3).
  26. Remove the fastener from storage bin (4).

  27. Remove the upper storage bin (1) from the instrument panel top cover (2).

  28. Disconnect the wire harness retainers that secure the wire harness (1) to the instrument panel pad, if equipped.

  29. Remove the lower instrument panel surround panel fasteners (1).

  31. Using a trim stick or equivalent, separate the retaining clips and remove the lower instrument panel surround panel (1).

  32. Remove the instrument panel pad fasteners (1).

  33. Remove the instrument panel pad fasteners (1).

  34. Remove the fasteners (1) in the cluster opening and the fasteners (2) from the center opening.

  35. From under the instrument panel, remove the fasteners (1) securing the duct work to the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) housing.

  36. Remove the instrument panel top pad assembly (1) from the support structure (2).
