Removal And Installation
REMOVAL
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the right front splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the accessory drive belt and vibration damper. Refer to
DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
The coils of the springs must not be compressed and packed together, there must remain a gap between them to avoid exceeding the maximum permissible force.
- Assemble the (Special Tool No. 2027207090, Tab, 90 Degree) and (Special Tool No. 2020001090, Adapter, Multi Air Spring Compressor) to the (Special Tool No. 10259B, Compressor, MultiAir® Spring).
- Position the tools (1) and tighten the screws to compress the springs on the variable valve actuation assembly (VVAA).
- Remove the (Special Tool No. 2064000090, Locking, Pulley) tool used to lock the vibration damper.
- Remove the inspection cap (1) from the timing cover.
- Remove the (Special Tool No. 2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) tool from the vacuum pump mounting surface.
- Remove the bolts (1a) and remove camshaft bearing caps 1 through 5 (1b).
- With the help of an assistant, using a suitable tool, relieve the tension of the timing chain tensioner (1) through the inspection hole of the timing cover.
- Remove the bolts (1a) and remove the rear camshaft bearing cap (1b).
- Lift the camshaft while guiding the timing chain (1) off of the camshaft sprocket.
- Remove the camshaft (1) from the cylinder head.
- Support the timing chain (1) to prevent it from falling into the engine.
- Remove the residual sealant from the cylinder head (1a) and from the rear camshaft bearing cap (1b). Check the integrity of the centering bushings (1c).
INSTALLATION
- Inspect the camshaft for damage and replace it if necessary.
- With the help of an assistant, using a suitable tool, relieve the tension of the timing chain tensioner through the inspection hole of the timing cover.NOTE:
Place the camshaft on the cylinder head in the approximate position to allow the (Special Tool No. 2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) tool to be installed later without excessive camshaft rotation.
- Install the camshaft on the cylinder head while guiding the timing chain onto the camshaft sprocket (1).NOTE:
Apply LOCTITE (red) 5203 under the rear camshaft bearing cap.
- Install the rear camshaft bearing cap (1b) on the centering bushings with the four bolts (1a) finger tight.
- Place the (Special Tool No. 2063500090, Locking, Camshaft) tool (1a) on the vacuum pump mounting surface. Be careful to position the pin (1b) in the hole (1c) on the camshaft. Securely tighten the tool bolts.NOTE:
It may be necessary to rotate the camshaft slightly to allow the pin (1b) to align with the hole (1c) on the camshaft.
- Remove the tool used to relieve the tension on the cam chain tensioner.
- Use a feeler gauge to check that the camshaft bearing (1) has a minimum clearance of at least 2.0 mm on both sides of the bearing journal. Make sure there is still 2.0 mm clearance on both sides of the bearing journal after the bearing caps have been installed and the bolts tightened to specification.
- Install the remaining camshaft bearing caps (1a) following the numbers (1b) marked on them (from timing end to flywheel end), keeping the arrows (1c) pointing to the timing end and install the bolts (1d) hand tight.
- Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the tools used to compress the springs on the VVAA.
- Reinstall the (Special Tool No. 2064000090, Locking, Pulley) tool for locking the vibration damper.
- Install the vibration damper and accessory drive belt. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the right front splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
