Section 59 (8HP45/845RE Automatic Transmission (Service Information)): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

CAUTION:

The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.

NOTE:

If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TCM Adaptation Procedure using the scan tool. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .

Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL .
Remove the left side Catalytic Converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .
Raise and support the vehicle.
Drain the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Remove the rear section of exhaust. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL .
Remove the heat shield below rear prop shaft.
If equipped, remove skid plates.

Disconnect the Mechanical Park Release (MPR) cable (1) from the lever (2).
Rotate the MPR lever (2) forward to engage neutral position and secure it with a suitable zip tie (3).
Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL .

Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
NOTE:
Be careful not to damage to transmission pan.

Remove the transmission mount nuts (2).
Remove the transmission crossmember bolts (1 and 3).
Remove the transmission crossmember.
If 4WD, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, INSTALLATION .
If 4WD, remove the front propeller shaft heat shield.
Remove the transfer case. Refer to REMOVAL .

Disconnect coolant hoses (1, 2) from the transmission heater.
Remove the two bolts that hold the transmission heater coolant hoses to the right side of the transmission.

Disconnect the 13-pin plug connector (1). Turn the connector counter-clockwise to release.
Unclip all remaining wiring harness from the transmission.

Release the locking tab (1) from the MPR cable (2) and remove the cable from the bracket (3).

Disconnect left front transmission oil cooler line clip (1).

Remove the speed nut (1) retaining the transmission cooler line bracket (2) at the bellhousing, near the engine oil dipstick tube (3).

Using (special tool #9546, Disconnect Tool) disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines (1) from the transmission heater (2).
Disconnect transmission vent hose.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and remove six torque converter bolts (1) through the starter pocket.
NOTE:
There are three sets 2 torque converter bolts located 120° apart from each other

.

NOTE:
If necessary, mark crankshaft pulley every 120° for converter bolt location.

Remove two engine to transmission bolts (3).
NOTE:
It may be necessary to support the rear of the engine during transmission removal.
Remove remaining transmission to engine bolts (4).

Carefully work transmission (2) and torque converter assembly rearward off the engine (1) block dowels.
NOTE:
Be careful not to damage or bend the transmission oil cooler lines.
Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
To remove the torque converter, carefully slide the torque converter out of the transmission.
