Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    3. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
    4. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are the P245A-00, P245C-00, or P245D-00 DTCs or any EGR DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE EGR VACUUM SUPPLY HOSES FOR CLOGGING, LEAKS, OR OTHER DAMAGE 
    NOTE:

    This DTC is very often set due to damage to one of the Vacuum Supply Hoses.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the EGR Vacuum Supply Hose from the EGR to the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid.
    3. Inspect the Vacuum Supply Hose from the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid to the EGR Cooling Bypass Actuator.

      Is either EGR Vacuum Supply Hose kinked, pinched, leaking, or otherwise damaged?

      Yes 

      • Replace the damaged EGR Vacuum Supply Hose in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE EGR VACUUM SUPPLY 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
    3. Disconnect the EGR Vacuum Supply Hose (from the engine) at the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid.
    4. Connect a vacuum gauge to the disconnected hose.

      Does the vacuum gauge detect any vacuum coming from the engine?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Determine the loss of EGR vacuum to the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid and repair as necessary.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE EGR COOLING BYPASS SOLENOID FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Reconnect the EGR Vacuum Supply Hose (from the engine) back to the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid.
    3. Disconnect the Vacuum Supply Hose at the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid. This is the hose routed from the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid to the EGR Cooling Bypass Actuator.
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Connect a vacuum gauge to the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid outlet nozzle.
    6. Using a jumper wire connected to ground, back probe the (K670) EGR Bypass Valve Signal circuit.

      Does the vacuum gauge detect any vacuum at the EGR Cooling Bypass Solenoid outlet nozzle?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Replace the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. INSPECT THE EGR COOLER FOR A BLOCKAGE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the EGR Cooler for blockage.

      Was the EGR Cooler free of blockage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. INSTALL A NEW EGR COOLING BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR AND RETEST FOR DTC 
    1. Install a new EGR Cooling Bypass Valve Actuator in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to VACUUM ACTUATOR, EGR BYPASS, REMOVAL .
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
    5. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

  8. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the poor connections.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
