Booster, Power Brake: Installation

  1. Install the power brake booster by sliding the push rod and studs through the dash panel and into mounting position. Insure vacuum check valve opening on front shell of booster is at approximately nine o'clock.

  2. Install the four brake pedal/booster nuts (1) in following sequence: Top inboard, bottom outboard, top outboard, bottom inboard. Failure to do so may result in damage to the booster. Tighten to the proper torque.

    Refer to TORQUE  .

    NOTE:

    Make sure the cup that the booster push rod reacts against is still in place in the pedal before installing the new booster rod keeper.

    NOTE:

    The brake pedal booster rod keeper (2) cannot be reused. Always install a new keeper if the brake pedal push rod was separated from the keeper.

  3. Install the power brake booster push rod and retainer (2) into NEW booster rod keeper, ensuring that the clips (1) are engaged.
  4. Install and adjust the stop lamp switch in the brake pedal bracket. Refer to SWITCH, STOP LAMP, INSTALLATION .

  5. Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
  6. Install the intermediate shaft (1) onto the steering gear input shaft (2).
    NOTE:

    A NEW  pinch bolt (3) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.

  7. Install a NEW  intermediate shaft coupling bolt (3) and tighten to the proper torque. Refer to COLUMN, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Connect the vacuum sensor and install the vacuum hose in the booster.
  9. Install the master cylinder and reservoir assembly. Refer to MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE, INSTALLATION .
  10. Install the Integrated Control Unit (ICU) mounting bracket and tighten to the proper torque. Refer to TORQUE  .
  11. Install the ICU. Refer to INTEGRATED CONTROL UNIT (ICU), INSTALLATION .
  12. Install the Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), INSTALLATION .
  13. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
  14. Bleed the base brake system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - BASE BRAKE BLEEDING  .
  15. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the brakes.
