Master Cylinder, Brake: Installation

NOTE:

The master cylinder must be bled before installing it on the vehicle.

  1. Bench bleed the master cylinder. Refer to MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Wipe the face of the power brake booster clean where the vacuum seal on the rear of the master cylinder comes in contact when it's installed. Do not get any cleaner or debris inside the booster.
  3. Line up the master cylinder mounting holes with the mounting studs on the power brake booster. Ensure o-ring seal is located on rear of master cylinder before installing into the booster. Ensure the master cylinder piston push rod lines up with the booster push rod, then carefully slide the master cylinder into the power brake booster until it contacts the face of the booster.
  4. Install two NEW  master cylinder mounting nuts (1). Tighten each nut to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

  5. Connect the wiring harness connector (2) to the brake fluid level switch.

  6. Connect the primary and secondary brake tubes (1) from the ICU to the master cylinder. Tighten the tube nuts to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
  7. Connect the wiring harnesses to the brake vacuum sensor and connect the vacuum tube to the brake booster.

  8. Install the PDC mount (1) and tighten the bolts (2).

  9. Install the PDC (2). Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), INSTALLATION .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
  11. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level.
  12. Install the engine cover, if equipped.
  13. Install a scan tool to initialize the ABS and perform the following:
    1. Clear any faults.
    2. Fill the master cylinder to the proper fill level and bleed the base hydraulic system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE  .
    3. Check for leaks.
    4. Perform the ABS Verification Test.
  14. Start engine and let idle for approximately 30 seconds, then turn off and wait about 1 minute. Fully stroke brake pedal to assure there are several strokes with assist prior to depletion of vacuum. If not, check for missing seal between master cylinder and booster.
  15. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the brakes.
