Cover(S), Engine Timing: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine cover (1).
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Drain the engine oil.

  5. Remove the cowl panel (1). Refer to COVER, COWL PANEL, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the cylinder head covers. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the cross under pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL .

  8. Remove the oil pan (2).
  9. Lower the vehicle.

  10. Remove the heater core supply hose (1) from the coolant outlet housing (2).
  11. Remove the upper radiator hose (2) with the cooling pipe (3) and thermostat housing (1).

  12. Remove the left side hood stabilizer support brace.
  13. Support the engine assembly using the (special tool #8534C, Fixture, Driveline Support).

  14. Support the engine at the cylinder head.
  15. Partially raise the vehicle.

  16. Remove the heater core return hose (1) from the water pump housing.
  17. Remove the lower radiator hose (2) from the water pump housing.

  18. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT .
  19. Remove the accessory drive belt (4). Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL .

  20. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner (2).

  21. Remove the accessory idler pulleys (1, 5).

  22. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper (1). Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL .

  23. Remove the water pump M6 bolts (2, 3).
  24. Remove the water pump M8 bolt (4).
  25. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.

  26. Remove the timing cover M8 bolts (2).
  27. Remove the timing cover M6 bolts (3).

  28. Using the seven indicated pry points, carefully remove the timing cover.

  29. If required, remove the remaining four M6 bolts (2) and the coolant outlet housing (1) from the engine timing cover.
    CAUTION:

    Do not use oil based liquids, wire brushes, abrasive wheels or metal scrapers to clean the engine gasket surfaces. Use only isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, along with plastic or wooden scrapers. Improper gasket surface preparation may result in engine fluid leakage.

  30. Remove all residual sealant from the timing chain cover, cylinder head and engine block mating surfaces. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION  .

  31. Remove and discard the coolant outlet housing gasket (1) and the water pump gasket (2).
