Test TC-40B, Alternator Field Not Switching Properly

NOTE: Perform TEST TC-40A, ALTERNATOR FIELD NOT SWITCHING PROPERLY before proceeding. After each repair is completed, perform TEST CH-VER, CHARGING VERIFICATION .

Using DRB, stop ASD fuel system actuation test. Turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector and terminals. PCM is located behind battery. Disconnect and inspect alternator quick-disconnect Natural connector located next to battery. Disconnect and inspect alternator rear harness connectors. If any connector is damaged, repair or replace as necessary.
If all connectors are okay, leave alternator rear harness connectors disconnected. Using an external ohmmeter, connect one lead to field terminal and one lead to ignition terminal at rear of alternator. See Figure or Figure . If resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, replace alternator.
If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, using DRB in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of alternator harness field terminal (Dark Green wire). If resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire.
