Test TC-40A, Alternator Field Not Switching Properly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Sundance, 1994 Plymouth Acclaim, 1994 Dodge Spirit, 1994 Dodge Shadow, and 1994 Chrysler LeBaron. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform TEST TC-1A, CHECKING SYSTEM FOR TROUBLE CODES  before proceeding. After each repair is completed, perform TEST CH-VER, CHARGING VERIFICATION .
  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using DRB, actuate ASD fuel system. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on ignition terminal (Dark Blue wire or Dark Green/Orange wire) at rear of alternator. See Figure or Figure . If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Dark Blue wire or Dark Green/Orange wire circuit to alternator.
  2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, check voltage on field terminal (Dark Green wire) at rear of alternator. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to TEST TC-40B.
  3. Using DRB, stop ASD fuel system actuation test. Turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect PCM connector and terminals. Disconnect and inspect alternator quick-disconnect Natural connector located next to battery. Disconnect battery negative connection. Disconnect and inspect alternator rear harness connectors. If any connector is damaged, repair or replace as necessary.
  4. If all connectors are okay, leave PCM and alternator rear harness connectors disconnected. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Dark Green wire between field terminal of harness connector and PCM connector terminal No. 20. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green wire circuit.
