Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1995 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1995 Dodge Ram Van, 1995 Dodge Pickup, and 1995 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

When performing vehicle diagnosis, the following must be done:

Ensure transmission/transaxle fluid level is correct and not contaminated or aerated.
Ensure throttle valve and shift linkage or cable are properly adjusted. See the appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in the AUTOMATIC TRANS SERVICING section.
Ensure battery is fully charged.
Ensure all electrical connections at transaxle/transmission, PCM and all sensors and switches on the engine are clean and properly installed.
Retrieve diagnostic fault messages. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC FAULT MESSAGES .
Repair diagnostic fault messages in the order displayed.
Always perform appropriate verification test after repair is completed. See VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A .

NOTE: On Pickup with 5.9L Diesel, if no diagnostic fault message exists for the overdrive solenoid, but problem exists, perform TEST NTC-2A . Tests are listed under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.

NOTE: Self-diagnostic tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) series scan tool. A generic scan tool may be used, but may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.
