Test 6A - Repairing Horn Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see Figure .
NOTE: Perform TEST 1A  before proceeding.
  1. Push horn button. If horn does not sound, go to step 3). If horn sounds, turn ignition off and disconnect VTA module. See Figure in TEST 1A and see VEHICLE THEFT ALARM MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect connector, clean and repair as needed. Turn ignition on. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage at VTA module connector terminal No. 6 (Gray/Orange wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open horn relay control circuit (Gray/Orange wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, check voltage at VTA module connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Tan wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open fused battery voltage feed circuit (Black/Tan wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace VTA module. Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  3. If horn does not sound when pushing steering wheel button, turn ignition off. Disconnect VTA module. Connect jumper wire between VTA module connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Red wire) and ground. If horn does not sound, go to next step. If horn sounds, replace VTA module. See VEHICLE THEFT ALARM MODULES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform TEST VER-1A  . See the STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT for horn button/wiring repair.
  4. If horn does not sound, remove horn relay. See Figure in TEST 1A. Inspect connector, clean and repair as needed. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check fused battery feed circuit voltage at horn relay receptacle terminal No. 1 (Black/Red wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, proceed to TEST 6B  .
  5. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage at horn relay receptacle terminal No. 3 (Black/Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Black/Red wire circuit. Perform TEST VER-1A  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Check resistance of horn relay control circuit. Connect using an ohmmeter between horn relay receptacle terminal No. 5 (Gray/Orange wire) and VTA module connector terminal No. 6 (Gray/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open horn control circuit (Gray/Orange wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  7. Connect a jumper wire between horn relay receptacle terminals No. 1 (Black/Red wire) and No. 2 (Dark Green/Yellow wire). If horn sounds, replace horn relay. Perform TEST VER-1A  . If horn does not sound, repair open horn feed circuit (Dark Green/Yellow wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  .
