Test TC-37A - TCC Solenoid (Relay) Circuit (DTC 37)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Wrangler, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 1995 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform TEST TC-1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-2A  after each repair.
NOTE: For this test, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid may also be called Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) relay.
  1. Using scan tool, erase fault codes. Using scan tool, actuate TCC relay. If TCC relay is clicking, go to next step. If TCC relay is not clicking, go to step 4).
  2. Condition required to set trouble code is not present at this time. TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code set when an open or short is detected in TCC relay control circuit. Possible causes: relay coil open or shorted, fused ignition switch output circuit open, relay control circuit open or shorted to ground or defective or damaged connector terminals or wires. Go to next step. Inspect all related wiring and connectors and repair as necessary. If no problems were found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, continue running TCC relay actuation. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between TCC relay and PCM connector. If TCC relay clicking was interrupted when harness was being wiggled, repair harness and/or connector where interruption occurred. If TCC relay clicking was not interrupted when harness was being wiggled, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION  in this article. Test is complete.
  4. Stop scan tool actuation of TCC relay. Disconnect TCC relay from connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. On XJ body TCC relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). On YJ body, TCC relay is located on right side of firewall next to battery. With scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at TCC relay connector of fused ignition switch output circuit (Yellow wire on XJ body or White/Yellow wire on YJ body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in fused ignition switch output circuit.
  5. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between TCC relay terminals No. 85 and 86. See Figure . If resistance is less than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, replace TCC relay.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 60-pin connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of TCC relay control circuit at TCC relay connector (Orange/Black wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair a short to ground in TCC relay control circuit.
  7. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of TCC relay control circuit (Orange/Black wire) between PCM 60-pin connector terminal No. 54 and TCC relay connector terminal "C". If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open TCC relay control circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM.
