Removal and Installation
CAUTION:
REMOVAL
- Set front wheels and tires to the straight-ahead position.
- Place tilt to the highest level and extend telescopic to maximum length.
- Remove left knee air bag module. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove steering wheel. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove steering column covers. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Disconnect the harness connectors from the combination switch, spiral cable, steering angle sensor, ignition switch, push-button ignition switch, NATS antenna amp, and tilt motor.
- Remove collar (1) and upper pinch bolt (A) and separate lower joint assembly (2) from steering column.CAUTION:
- Do not move steering gear during removal or installation of steering column.
- Do not reuse collar.
- Remove bolts and steering column from steering member.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
- Check each part of steering column for damage or wear. If damage is found, replace steering column.
- If vehicle has been involved in a collision, or if noise and rattles are heard during a turn, check the length of the column. Refer to Inspection . If out of specification, replace steering column.
- Measure steering column rotating torque using a preload gauge (A). Replace steering column assembly if the rotating torque is out of specification.
| Rotating torque | : Refer to Steering Gear . |
- Check steering column length if vehicle has been involved in a collision. Replace steering column if measurement is out of specification.
CAUTION:
Set the telescopic mechanism to its minimum length before measuring.
| Steering column length | : Refer to Steering Column . |
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
- Perform "ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REPLACING OR REMOVING DAST PARTS". Refer to Diagnosis Procedure .
CAUTION:
When installing the steering column (1), finger tighten all bolts then torque to specification in the sequence shown in the illustration. Do not apply undue stress to steering column.
| Bolt 1 | : 31 N.m (3.2 kg-m, 22.9 ft-lb) |
| Bolt 2 | :16.9 N.m (1.7 kg-m, 12.5 ft-lb) |
- While installing the steering column, do not move the steering gear.
- After installation, turn steering wheel to make sure it moves smoothly. Make sure the number of turns are the same from the straight-forward position to left and right locks. Make sure that the steering wheel is in a neutral position when driving straight ahead.
- After installing the steering column, check the tilt mechanism for proper operation.
- After installing the steering column, check if steering wheel has smooth operation while turning to the left and right end stops.
- Adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor. Refer to Description .
- Perform "ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REPLACING OR REMOVING DAST PARTS". Refer to Special Repair Requirement .
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
- Check each part of steering column for damage or other malfunctions. Replace if necessary.
- Check that there is no malfunction, such as unusual steering feel or interference when operating tilt and telescopic.
- Check tilt and telescopic mechanism operating range.
Tilt operating range : Refer to Steering Column . Telescopic operating range : Refer to Steering Column . - Check the steering wheel play, neutral position steering wheel, steering wheel turning torque, and front wheel turning angle.
- Steering wheel play: Refer to Steering Wheel .
- Neutral position steering wheel, steering wheel turning torque, and front wheel turning angle: Refer to Inspection .
