DTC U0296  : F-CAN 4 Malfunction (Battery Charge Control Module - Battery Charger)

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information .

U0296 F-CAN 4 Malfunction (Battery Charge Control Module - Battery Charger)      

DTC (Electric Powertrain)

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    -2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    -3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    -4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    -5. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    U0296 F-CAN 4 Malfunction (Battery Charge Control Module - Battery Charger)      

    Is DTC U0296 indicated?

    YES 

    The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the battery charger and the battery charge control module. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  2. CAN gateway system DTCs check

    -1. Check for CAN gateway system DTCs with the HDS.

    DTC (CAN Gateway)

    Are any DTCs indicated?

    YES 

    Go to the CAN gateway system DTC(s) troubleshooting .

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. DTC check

    -1. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    DTC Description Confirmed DTC Pending DTC Freeze Frame
    P0AFA HV Battery Charging System Voltage Low      

    Is DTC P0AFA indicated?

    YES 

    Go to the DTC P0AFA troubleshooting .

    NO 

    Go to step 4.

  4. Open wire check (IGC/IG(CHGR) line)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    -2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure .

    -3. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Relay circuit board connector C (10P)
    Battery charger 8P connector

    -4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Relay circuit board connector C (10P): disconnected
      Battery charger 8P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 Relay circuit board connector C (10P) (female terminals) No. 6:
    Test point 2 Battery charger 8P connector (female terminals) No. 8:

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Go to step 5.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the IGC/IG(CHGR) wire between the relay circuit board and the battery charger.

  5. Open wire check (F-CAN D_H line, F-CAN D_L line)

    -1. Disconnect the following connector.

    Battery charge control module connector B (40P)

    -2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Relay circuit board connector C (10P): disconnected
      Battery charger 8P connector: disconnected
      Battery charge control module connector B (40P): disconnected
    Test point 1 Battery charge control module connector B (40P) No. 3
    Test point 2 Battery charger 8P connector (female terminals) No. 4:
    Test point 1 Battery charge control module connector B (40P) No. 23
    Test point 2 Battery charger 8P connector (female terminals) No. 3:

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Replace the battery charger .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN D_H wire or the F-CAN D_L wire between the battery charger and the battery charge control module.
