D-Pillar Trim
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations (see COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX ) and the precautions and procedures (see PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES ) before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- Follow the D-pillar trim installation procedure carefully; improper installation could cause the side curtain airbag to deploy improperly and possibly cause injury.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to scratch the trim or the panels.
- Use the appropriate tools from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- The upper clip in the D-pillar trim (A) consists of a grommet (B) and a pin (C). The grommet expanded with the pin secures it to the body panel (D). The projections (E) on the pin are broken during removal, so the clip must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
- Remove these items:
- Tailgate weatherstrip, as needed (see TAILGATE WEATHERSTRIP REPLACEMENT )
- Rear side trim panel (see REAR SIDE TRIM PANEL )
- Cargo area light (see REAR INDIVIDUAL MAP LIGHT TEST/REPLACEMENT )
- With power tailgate: Left tailgate side trim (see TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - TAILGATE AREA )
- With power tailgate: Remove the pivot bracket mounting bolts, then push the power tailgate rod (A) in the D-pillar trim (B).
- Release the hooks (A) and the tabs (B) from the both D-pillar trims (C), and pull the rear roof trim (D) down by hand to detach the clips, then pass the seat belt (E) through the hole (F) in the trim.
- Pry off the lid (A), then remove the bolt from the D-pillar trim (B).
- Hit the surface of the D-pillar trim (A) with a rubber mallet. The clip is located in the top of the D-pillar about 15mm behind the "SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG" mark (B). Hitting the trim surface breaks the projections (C) on the pin (D) and pushes it into the grommet (E) on the body (F).NOTE: The clip must be replaced with a new one when the D-pillar trim is reinstalled.
- Remove the D-pillar trim (A).
- Detach the tabs (B) and the hooks (C) from the upper quarter window trim (D).
- Pull the D-pillar trim back by hand to detach the clips.
- With power tailgate: Disconnect the satellite speaker connector (E).

With power tailgate
- If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the D-pillar trim and all of its clips.
- If the side curtain airbag has not deployed, remove the upper clip (A) from the removed D-pillar trim (B) and discard it. Then check the trim and note the following:
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying, improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the D-pillar trim and replace it if it has any of the following damage:
- Any cracks, deformations, or stress-whitened areas in the D-pillar trim or rear roof trim (C)
- Any cracks or stress-whitened areas in the clip seating surfaces (D)
- If the clips (E) are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Replace the upper clip with a new one.

- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying, improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the D-pillar trim and replace it if it has any of the following damage:
- Before installing the D-pillar trim (A), whether replaced or reinstalled, temporarily remove the new clip (B).
- Check the overlap between the headliner and D-pillar trim, and if necessary, adjust it (see CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE HEADLINER/PILLAR TRIM OVERLAP ).
- Carefully reinstall the new upper clip (A) to the D-pillar trim (B). Make sure that the grommet (C) is nearest to the top of the pin (D) as shown.
- Reinstall the D-pillar trim (A).
- Place the trim over the D-pillar (B), fit the upper clip (C), and all of the other clips into holes (D) in the body, then lightly push the trim into place.
- With power tailgate: Reconnect the satellite speaker connector (E).
- Make sure the side curtain airbag isn't tucked under the clips or trim ribs.
- Push lightly on the upper clip. If you push too hard, the clip will be damaged, and it will not hold the trim properly.
