Test TC-1A - Checking System For DTCS

- Battery must be fully charged before proceeding. Attempt to start engine. Connect scan tool to engine diagnostic connector. Record scan tool Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- If scan tool has a blank screen, ensure there is good ground at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 1. Ensure scan tool, scan tool cartridge and adapter cable are functional. In sequence, substitute adapter cable, cartridge and scan tool until problem is corrected.
- If scan tool displays RAM TEST FAILURE, CARTRIDGE ERROR, KEY PAD TEST FAILURE, LOW BATTERY or HIGH BATTERY, see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in TESTS W/CODES - BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, check following items in sequence and repair as necessary.
- Ensure ignition is on.
- Ensure there is continuity on Serial Communications Interface (SCI) transmit circuit between Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector terminal No. 25 and DLC terminal No. 3.
- Ensure SCI transmit circuit is not shorted to ground.
- Ensure there is continuity on SCI receive circuit between PCM connector terminal No. 45 and DLC terminal No. 4.
- Ensure SCI receive circuit is not shorted to ground.
- Ensure scan tool, cartridge and adapter cable are functional.
In sequence, substitute cable, cartridge and scan tool until problem is corrected. If previous conditions are met and NO RESPONSE message remains, replace PCM. Ensure SRI mileage is reset when replacing PCM.
5) If DTCs are displayed, see SCAN TOOL DTCS table. If no DTCs are displayed and a driveability problem is present, go to TEST NTC-1A.
