Transmission - LHD RWD: Installation

NOTE: Prior to installing a new transmission or an overhauled transmission with a new main control, record the solenoid strategy identification tag. If a new main control was installed, install the replacement solenoid body tag over the original identification tag.
  1. If removed, install the bracket and the bolts.

    Torque: 63 Nm

  2. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  3. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with multi-purpose grease.

    Material: Grease - Multi Purpose (ESB-M1C93-B)

  4. Install the special tool.Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  5. NOTE: If transmission is being replaced, remove the transmission fluid fill plug and verify that the transmission is filled with transmission fluid.
    NOTE: If transmission was disassembled, add transmission fluid to the transmission.

    1. Remove the transmission fluid fill plug transmission fluid level indicator assembly.

      Torque: 26 Nm

    2. Verify transmission is filled with transmission fluid.
    3. Slightly tilt the transmission rearward.
    4. If the transmission was disassembled, add 11.35L (12 qt) of transmission fluid to the transmission through the transmission fluid fill hole.

  6. Using the high-lift transmission jack, position the transmission into the vehicle behind the engine.Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  7. Remove the special tool.Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  8. Align the index-mark made during removal.

  9. NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully seated in the transmission before aligning the transmission to the engine.
    NOTE: With the transmission in a horizontal position, move it toward the engine and position it on the dowel pins.

    Install the RH side bellhousing bolts.

  10. Install the LH side bellhousing bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.

    Torque: 48 Nm

  11. Position the bracket and install the upper bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 48 Nm

  12. Install the lower bellhousing bolt.

    Torque: 48 Nm

  13. Position the wiring onto the transmission, install the retainers and connect the transmission electrical connector.

    Torque: 35 Nm

  14. Install the bracket and bolt.

    Torque: 40 Nm

  15. Install the transmission support crossmember. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .
  16. NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.

    Install the dual catalytic converter Y-pipe to muffler bolts.

    Torque: 40 Nm

  17. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Install the new torque converter nuts.

    Torque: 48 Nm

  18. Install the access cover and the pin-type retainers.

  19. Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor . Refer to: Starter Motor .
  20. Install the transmission fluid cooler bracket and the retainers.

    Torque: 26 Nm

    1. Connect the selector lever cable to the bracket.
    2. Connect the selector lever cable to the manual control lever.

  21. Inspect the transmission fluid cooler O-ring seals and install new O-ring seals if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring seals.

    Material: Automatic Transmission Fluid (WSS-M2C949-A,)

  22. Position the transmission fluid cooler, install the retainers.

    Torque: 11 Nm

  23. Install the following items:

    1. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to: REAR DRIVESHAFT
    2. Refer to: FRONT SUBFRAME

  24. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to: BATTERY - VEHICLES WITH: SINGLE BATTERY . Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: DUAL BATTERIES
  25. Verify the selector lever cable is correctly adjusted. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 3.5L EcoBoost (235kW/320PS) . Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 3.5L Duratec (202kW/275PS) .
  26. Check the exhaust system for leaks.
  27. After completing the repairs, perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure using a diagnostic scan tool.
  28. If a new transmission or a new main control was installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
  29. If the transmission was overhauled, the adaptive learning drive cycle must be updated. Refer to: Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle .
  30. While driving the vehicle, use the scan tool to verify that the TFT has reached a temperature of 96.7 deg.C-102 deg.C (206 deg.F-215 deg.F). This will circulate the transmission fluid through the torque converter and the transmission fluid cooling system, eliminating any trapped air in the transmission fluid cooling system.
  31. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Level Check .
