Pinpoint Test AE: P1709
- Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TCM and PCM communicate through messages sent over FD-CAN, and over a private Powertrain CAN. The TCM also contains a Park Neutral Position Switch that sends a signal to the PCM over a hardwired circuit when the transmission is in park or neutral.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P1709:00 Park Neutral Position Switch Out Of Self Test Range: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates the park neutral position switch circuit did not show that transmission was in park or neutral during a PCM self-test. This could be caused by a self-test being carried out with the transmission in gear, a transmission range sensor fault, or a park neutral position switch circuit fault. Possible Sources
- PCM self-test carried out with the transmission in gear
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
- Circuit open or shorted
- TR sensor fault
- TCM fault
- PCM fault
- AE1 VERIFY PARK SYSTEM OPERATION
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Access the TCM and monitor the TR_CORRECTEDPID
- Select REVERSE.
- Select NEUTRAL.
- Select DRIVE.
- Select PARK.
Does PID PID TR_CORRECTED show correct park system operation?
Yes GO to AE2 No RESOLVE all TR sensor circuit diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). REFER to the DTC Chart. If no TR sensor circuit diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, RESOLVE the Engagement Quality > Park symptom. REFER to: External Controls - Vehicles With: Column Shift . REFER to: External Controls - Vehicles With: Console Shift . - AE2 VERIFY PARK NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OPERATION
- Access the PCM and monitor the PNPPID
- Select PARK.
Does PID PNP show that the park neutral position switch is ON??
Yes GO to AE3 No GO to AE4 - AE3 RECHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the PCM.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, CARRY OUT the KOEO and KOERPCM self-tests.
Is DTC P1709 present in the PCM?
Yes GO to AE6 No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. - AE4 CHECK THE PARK NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM C1233T.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
- Ignition ON.
- Select PARK.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1233T-5 Ground
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to AE6 No GO to AE5 - AE5 CHECK THE PARK NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TCM C1822.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to AE7 No REPAIR the open circuit. - AE6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect all PCM connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Connect all PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Connect all other electrical connectors that were previously disconnected.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK for an applicable TSB, GSB, SSM, or FSA. If a service bulletin exists for this concern, discontinue this test and follow bulletin instructions. If none address this concern, Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
Internet Explorer version 11 or greater is required to perform this Pinpoint Test.No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. - AE7 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect the TCM connector.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Connect the TCM connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
- Connect all other electrical connectors that were previously disconnected.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK for an applicable TSB, GSB, SSM, or FSA. If a service bulletin exists for this concern, discontinue this test and follow bulletin instructions. If none address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
