Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
- Inspect the key for damage.
- P1 VERIFY THE DOOR LOCK OPERATION
- Press the lock and unlock button on the door lock control switch while observing the door lock operation.
Do the door locks operate?
Yes GO to P2 No REFER to the Symptom Chart: Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems - Electrical . - P2 VERIFY THE HORN OPERATION USING THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION) (HORN_RELAY)
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the BCM Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Select the BCM horn PID (HORN_RELAY) and active command the horn on then off.
Does the horn sound when commanded on?
Yes GO to P3 No REFER to: Horn . - P3 VERIFY THE HAZARD LAMP OPERATION
- Activate the hazard lamp function.
Do the hazard lamps operate correctly?
Yes GO to P4 No REFER to: Turn Signal and Hazard Lamps . - P4 VERIFY THE TAILGATE LATCH RELEASE OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
- Press the tailgate release button located at the rear of the vehicle.
Does the tailgate latch release (manual tailgate) or the tailgate power open (power tailgate)?
Yes GO to P5 No For a manual tailgate, GO to Pinpoint Test M For a power tailgate, REFER to: Power Tailgate . - P5 CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK BUTTONS
- Ignition OFF.
- Press the lock and then unlock button on the suspect key.
Do the doors lock and unlock?
Yes GO to P6 No REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . - P6 CHECK THE TAILGATE BUTTON
- Press the tailgate button twice on the suspect key.
- For vehicles with a manual tailgate, press the tailgate release button located on the tailgate within 45 seconds of pressing the button on the RKE transmitter.
Does the tailgate latch release (manual tailgate) or the power open (power tailgate)?
Yes If not equipped with a panic alarm/vehicle locator button, REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . If equipped with a panic alarm/vehicle locator button, GO to P7 No REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . - Press the tailgate button twice on the suspect key.
- P7 CHECK THE PANIC ALARM/VEHICLE LOCATOR BUTTON
- Press the panic alarm/vehicle locator on the suspect passive key.
Do the exterior lamps flash and the horn sound?
Yes If not equipped with factory remote start, REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . If equipped with factory remote start, GO to P8 No REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . - P8 VERIFY THE REMOTE START OPERATION
- Close all the doors, the hood and the tailgate.

NOTE: Each button press must be done within 3 seconds of each other.
From outside the vehicle using the key:
- Press the door lock button.
- Press the remote start button twice.
Does the vehicle remotely start?
