Pinpoint Test AE : DTC P2531, P2532

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Refer to TRANSMISSION CONTROLS - 6R80 for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TCM receives an ignition switch position signal from the BJB through a hardwired circuit. The TCM also receives ignition switch position messages from the BCM over HS-CAN1.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
TCM P2531:00 Ignition Switch Run Position Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open circuit or a short to ground in the ignition switch position run (ISPR) circuit. HS-CAN1 messages from the BCM indicate the ignition is on, but voltage is low on the ISPR circuit.
TCM P2532:00 Ignition Switch Run Position Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to ground in the ignition switch position run circuit. HS-CAN1 messages from the BCM indicate the ignition is off, but voltage is high on the ISPR circuit. This DTC can also be caused by a remote start system on some vehicles.

    Possible Sources

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires or ground and missing or damaged seals
    • TCM calibration
    • TCM

  2. AE1 RECHECK FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) P2531 AND/OR P2532

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the TCM.

    • Repeat the following steps 2 times:

      • Ignition OFF
      • Wait 10 seconds.
      • Ignition ON
      • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Did DTC P2531 and/or P2532 return?

    Yes  GO to  AE3
No  For vehicles with remote start, GO to  AE2. For vehicles without remote start, the concern is not present at this time.
  3. AE2 OPERATE THE REMOTE START SYSTEM

    • Repeat the following steps 2 times:

      • Ignition OFF
      • Wait 10 seconds.
      • Start the vehicle using the remote start.
      • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Did DTC P2531 and/or P2532 return?

Yes  PROGRAM the TCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
No  The concern is not present at this time.
  4. AE3 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) VPWR CIRCUIT FOR KEY ON VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TCM C1822.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1822-31
      GFD463950Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

    Yes  GO to  AE4
No  VERIFY BJB Fuse 16 (10A) is OK. If OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the open circuit. If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  5. AE4 CHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) VPWR CIRCUIT FOR KEY OFF VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1822-31
      GFD463950Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the voltage approximately 0 volts?

    Yes  GO to  AE5
No  REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the short to power.
  6. AE5 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect TCM C1822 and all related in-line electrical connectors.

    • Using a good light source, inspect all  disconnected electrical connectors for the following:

      • corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    • Reconnect TCM C1822 and all related in-line electrical connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, clear all DTCs.

    • Carry out the TCM self-test.

    Did the DTC return?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB (general service bulletin), SSM (special service message) or FSA (Field Service Action). If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
