Pinpoint Test Ah : DTC U0028, U0037, U0073, U0074

  1. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L DIESEL for schematic and connector information. Refer to TRANSMISSION CONTROLS - 10R80 for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The TCM communicates with other vehicle modules over HS-CAN1. The TCM and the PCM also communicate over a Powertrain CAN. A DTC will set if the TCM detects an error with either communication bus.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    TCM U0028:00 Vehicle Communication Bus A: No Sub Type Information This DTC illuminates the wrench light in conjunction with U0073.
    TCM U0037:00 Vehicle Communication Bus B: No Sub Type Information This DTC illuminates the wrench light in conjunction with U0074.
    TCM U0073:00 Control Module Communication Bus "A" Off: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a fault on the vehicle HS-CAN1 bus.
    TCM U0074:00 Control Module Communication Bus "B" Off: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a fault on the Powertrain CAN bus.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires or ground and missing or damaged seals
    • Communication concern
    • Module fault
    • TCM

  2. AH1 CARRY OUT A TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Is DTC U0028, U0037, U0073 and/or U0074 present? 

    Yes  If any non-network TCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, RESOLVE those first. REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .. For U0028 and/or U0073, GO to  AH2. For U0037 and/or U0074, GO to  AH6
    No  If the TCM does not respond to the scan tool, REFER to: Communications Network . Otherwise, the concern is not present at this time.
  3. AH2 CHECK FOR HS-CAN1 (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK 1) BUS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) IN OTHER MODULES

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all continuous memory diagnostic trouble codes (CMDTCs) from all modules.

    Are HS-CAN1 bus diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present in other modules on the network? 

    Yes  There is an intermittent No HS-CAN1 communication, all modules are not responding concern. REFER to: Communications Network .
    No  This indicates a fault that only affects the TCM. GO to  AH3
  4. AH3 INSPECT THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) HS-CAN1 (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK 1) CONNECTORS

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TCM C1822.

    • Disconnect In-line connector C1595.

    • Inspect each connector for:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    Are any connector or pin issues present? 

    Yes  REPAIR any connector or pin issues.
    No  GO to  AH4
  5. AH4 ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THE CONCERN

    • Connect TCM C1822.

    • Connect In-line connector C1595.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the TCM.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, access the TCM and monitor PID VPWR.

    • Wiggle test the wiring harness between the TCM and splice S195 while monitoring PID VPWR.

    Did the scan tool lose communication with the TCM during the wiggle test? 

    Yes  REPAIR the intermittent circuit fault in the wiring harness.
    No  GO to  AH5
  6. AH5 RECHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) U0028, U0073

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Is DTC U0028 and/or U0073 present? 

    Yes  GO to  AH12
    No  The fault is not present at this time. It might have been caused by a loose or corroded connector, or an intermittent fault condition. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  7. AH6 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CAN (CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TCM C1822.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 1, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AH9
    No  GO to  AH7
  8. AH7 CHECK EACH MODULE ON THE POWERTRAIN CAN (CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Disconnect modules that communicate on Powertrain CAN one at a time.

    • Every time a module is disconnected, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Did the resistance increase to greater than 1, 000 ohms when one of the modules was disconnected? 

    Yes  To check the operation of that module, GO to  AH8
    No  REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify and repair the short to ground in the powertrain CAN circuit.
  9. AH8 CHECK THE SUSPECT MODULE FOR CORRECT OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the suspect module.

    • Using a good light source, inspect the connector for the following:

      • corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    • Reconnect all previously disconnected electrical connectors. Make sure the connectors seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSB. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new suspect module.. For a PCM concern, Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing . . For a glow plug control module (GPCM) concern, REFER to: Glow Plug Module . . For NOX11 concern, REFER to: Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Sensor 11 . . For a NOX12 concern, REFER to: Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Sensor 12 . . For a particulate matter bank 1, sensor 1 (PM11) module concern, REFER to: Particulate Matter Sensor . . For a reductant level sensor concern, REFER to: Reductant Tank .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  10. AH9 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CAN (CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect PCM C1233B.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals.

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AH10
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
  11. AH10 INSPECT THE POWERTRAIN CAN (CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CONNECTORS

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Using a good light source, inspect each connector for the following:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    Are any connector or pin issues present? 

    Yes  REPAIR any connector or pin issues.
    No  GO to  AH11
  12. AH11 ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THE CONCERN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Reconnect all electrical connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the TCM.

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Is DTC U0037 and/or U0074 present? 

    Yes  GO to  AH12
    No  The fault is not present at this time. It might have been caused by a loose or corroded connector, or an intermittent fault condition. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  13. AH12 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect TCM C1822 and all related in-line electrical connectors.

    • Using a good light source, inspect all  disconnected electrical connectors for the following:

      • corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    • Reconnect TCM C1822 and all related in-line electrical connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSB. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new TCM.     No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
